Why Hitler Wished He Was Muslim

The Führer admired Atatürk’s subordination of religion to the state—and his ruthless treatment of minorities.

‘It’s been our misfortune to have the wrong religion,” Hitler complained to his pet architect Albert Speer. “Why did it have to be Christianity, with its meekness and flabbiness?” Islam was a Männerreligion—a “religion of men”—and hygienic too. The “soldiers of Islam” received a warrior’s heaven, “a real earthly paradise” with “houris” and “wine flowing.” This, Hitler argued, was much more suited to the “Germanic temperament” than the “Jewish filth and priestly twaddle” of Christianity.

For decades, historians have seen Hitler’s Beer Hall Putsch of 1923 as emulating Mussolini’s 1922 March on Rome. Not so, says Stefan Ihrig in “Atatürk in the Nazi Imagination.” Hitler also had Turkey in mind—and not just the 1908 march of the Young Turks on Constantinople, which brought down a government. After 1917, the bankrupt, defeated and cosmopolitan Ottoman Empire contracted into a vigorous “Turanic” nation-state. In the early 1920s, the new Turkey was the first “revisionist” power to opt out of the postwar system, retaking lost lands on the Syrian coast and control over the Strait of the Dardanelles. Hitler, Mr. Ihrig writes, saw Turkey as the model of a “prosperous and völkisch modern state.” Through the 1920s and 1930s, Nazi publications lauded Turkey as a friend and forerunner. In 1922, for example, the Völkischer Beobachter, the Nazi Party’s weekly paper, praised Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the “Father of the Turks,” as a “real man,” embodying the “heroic spirit” and the Führerprinzip, or führer principle, that demanded absolute obedience.

Atatürk’s subordination of Islam to the state anticipated Hitler’s strategy toward Christianity. The Nazis presented Turkey as stronger for having massacred its Armenians and expelling its Greeks. “Who,” Hitler asked in August 1939, “speaks today of the extermination of the Armenians?”

This was not Germany’s first case of Türkenfieber, or Turk fever. Turkey had slid into World War I not by accident but because Germany had greased the tracks: training officers, supplying weapons, and drawing the country away from Britain and France. Hitler wanted to repeat the Kaiser’s experiment in search of a better result. By 1936, Germany supplied half of Turkey’s imports and bought half of Turkey’s exports, notably chromite, vital for steel production.

But Atatürk, Mr. Ihrig writes, hedged his bets and dodged a “decisive friendship.” After Atatürk’s death in 1938, his successor, Ismet Inönü, tacked between the powers. In 1939, Turkey signed a treaty of mutual defense with Britain, but in 1941 Turkey agreed to a Treaty of Friendship with Germany, securing Hitler’s southern flank before he invaded Russia. Inönü hinted that Turkey would join the fight if Germany could conquer the Caucasus. As David Motadel writes in “Islam and Nazi Germany’s War,” Muslims fought on both sides in World War II.

But only Nazis and Islamists had a political-spiritual romance. Both groups hated Jews, Bolsheviks and liberal democracy. Both sought what Michel Foucault, praising the Iranian Revolution in 1979, would later call the spiritual-political “transfiguration of the world” by “combat.” The caliph, the Islamist Zaki Ali explained, was the “führer of the believers.” “Made by Jews, led by Jews—therewith Bolshevism is the natural enemy of Islam,” wrote Mahomed Sabry, a Berlin-based propagandist for the Muslim Brotherhood in “Islam, Judaism, Bolshevism,” a book that the Reich’s propaganda ministry recommended to journalists.

By late 1941, Germany controlled large Muslim populations in southeastern Europe and North Africa. Nazi policy extended the grand schemes of imperial Germany toward madly modern ends. To aid the “liberation struggle of Islam,” the propaganda ministry told journalists to praise “the Islamic world as a cultural factor,” avoid criticism of Islam, and substitute “anti-Jewish” for “anti-Semitic.”

 

 

In April 1942, Hitler became the first European leader to declare that Islam was “incapable of terrorism.” As usual, it is hard to tell if the Führer set the tone or merely amplified his people’s obsessions. Like Atatürk, Hitler saw the Turkish renaissance as racial, not religious. Germans of Turkish and Iranian descent were exempt from the Nuremberg Laws, but the racial status of German Arabs remained creatively indefinite, even after September 1943, when Muslims became eligible for membership in the Nazi Party. As the war went on, Balkan Muslims were added to the “racially valuable peoples of Europe.”

 

 

The Palestinian Arab leader Haj Amin al-Husseini, Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, recruited thousands of these “Musligermanics” as the first non-Germanic volunteers for the SS. Soviet prisoners of Turkic origin volunteered too. In November 1944, Himmler and the Mufti created an SS-run school for military imams at Dresden. Haj Amin al-Husseini, the founder of Palestinian nationalism, is notorious for his efforts to persuade the Nazis to extend their genocide of the Jews to the Palestine Mandate.

The Mufti met Hitler and Himmler in Berlin in 1941 and asked the Nazis to guarantee that when the Wehrmacht drove the British from Palestine, Germany would establish an Arab regime and assist in the “removal” of its Jews. Hitler replied that the Reich would not intervene in the Mufti’s kingdom, other than to pursue their shared goal: “the annihilation of Jewry living in Arab space.” The Mufti settled in Berlin, befriended Adolf Eichmann, and lobbied the governments of Romania, Hungary and Bulgaria to cancel a plan to transfer Jews to Palestine.

Subsequently, some 400,000 Jews from these countries were sent to death camps. Mr. Motadel describes the Mufti’s Nazi dealings vividly, but he also excels in unearthing other odious and fascinating characters. Among them: Zeki Kiram, the Ottoman officer turned disciple of Rashid Rida, founder of the Muslim Brotherhood; and Johann von Leers, a Nazi professor who converted to Islam and became Omar Amin, an anti-Semitic publicist for Nasser’s Egypt. Some of the Muslim Nazis ended badly. Others stayed at their desks, then consulted for Saudi Arabia in retirement.

The major Muslim collaborators escaped. Fearing Muslim uprisings, the Allies did not try the Mufti as a war criminal; he died in Beirut in 1974, politically eclipsed by his young cousin, Mohammed Abdul Raouf al-Qudwa al-Husseini, better known as Yasser Arafat. Meanwhile, at Munich, the surviving SS volunteers, joined by refugees from the Soviet Union, formed postwar Germany’s first Islamic community, its leaders an ex-Wehrmacht imam and the erstwhile chief imam of the Eastern Muslim SS Division.

In the 1950s, some of Munich’s Muslim ex-Nazis worked for the intelligence services of the U.S., tightening the “green belt against Communism.” A revolutionary idea must be seeded before, in Heidegger’s words, “suddenly the unbound powers of being come forth and are accomplished as history.”

Seven decades passed between Europe’s revolutionary spring of 1848 and the Russian Revolution of 1917. The effects of Germany’s ideological seeding of Muslim societies in the 1930s and ’40s are only now becoming apparent. Impeccably researched and clearly written, Messrs. Motadel and Ihrig’s books will transform our understanding of the Nazi policies that were, Mr. Motadel writes, some “of the most vigorous attempts to politicize and instrumentalize Islam in modern history.” Mr. Green is the author of “The Double Life of Dr. Lopez” and “Three Empires on the Nile.”

Man kann so viel Geld für Versicherungen ausgeben, daß man gar nichts mehr zum Versichern hat. Mit Sicherheit ist es eben so.

Zufriedene Sklaven sind die schlimmsten Feinde der Freiheit.

Kreativität ist eine Intelligenz, die Spaß hat.

Man kann alles nur aus gewisser Distanz erkennen, wer sich ereifert, empört, wer mit seiner Nase an etwas klebt, der hat die Perspektive verloren, der erkennt nichts mehr, der hat nur noch seine Phantasie von der Welt im Kopf. So entsteht Paranoia, die sich Religion, und Religion als Politik, sogar als Wissenschaft nennt.

Islamisten sind eine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche nicht gesehen. Juden sind keine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche gesehen. So funktioniert die Wahrnehmung von  Feiglingen.

Humorlose Menschen könner nur fürchten oder hassen und werden Mönche oder Terroristen.

Menschen sind nicht gleich, jeder einzelne Mensch ist ein Unikat.

Erkenntnis gilt für alle, auch für Muslime, Albaner, Frauen und Homosexuelle.

Islam gehört zu Deutschland, Judentum gehört zu Israel.

Der Konsensterror (Totalitarismus) ist in Deutschland allgegenwärtig.

Es wird nicht mehr diskutiert, sondern nur noch diffamiert.

Wit is one of the 10 words investigated by C.S. Lewis in his Studies in Words. He tells us that “wit” was first used to connote “mind, reason, intelligence,” fundamental good sense. Then its meaning changed to suggest a person’s entire mental make-up. Then it rose in aesthetic significance to convey the imaginative skill of poets and other artists. “I take it that wit in the sense now current means that sort of mental agility or gymnastic which uses language as the principal equipment of its gymnasium,” Lewis wrote. The word in our day describes all verbal cleverness, usually of the kind delivered orally. Pun, epigram, repartee, amusing paradox, surprising juxtaposition—these are among the verbal machines on which, to stay with Lewis’s gymnasium metaphor, wit works out.

In imaginative writing—novels, movies, plays, poems—wit in this sense is most frequently found in clever dialogue; or in lyrics of the kind Ira Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Lorenz Hart wrote; or in works of nonfiction in amusing formulations. Falstaff, Shakespeare’s wittiest character, was himself an artist of verbal wit, the Falstaff who said, “I am not only witty in myself, but the cause that wit is in other men.” Written, or literary, wit had a good run in the 18th century: in the plays of William Congreve and Richard Sheridan, in the poetry of Alexander Pope, and in the various works of Jonathan Swift. Wit plays throughout Edward Gibbon’s Decline and Fall, as in his sentence on the Emperor Gordian II: “Twenty-two acknowledged concubines, and a library of sixty-two thousand volumes, attested the variety of his inclinations, and from the productions which he left behind him, it appears that the former as well as the latter were designed for use rather than ostentation.”

Wit has come to find its consummation in conversation. Talk is now its main medium, unrehearsed talk in which someone says something so dazzling as to be memorable. Wit is not, as in writing, evoked in tranquility, but is instead, as Benjamin Errett defines it in Elements of Wit,¹ “spontaneous creativity.” Wit, though generally humorous, needs to be distinguished from humor, which can be created at leisure, polished through revision, and even tested upon focus groups to insure that it works. “Unlike humor,” Errett writes, “wit is a speed game.”

That wit wasn’t always what it is today, a form of brilliant and memorable talk, is attested by such idioms and words as “at wit’s end,” “dimwit,” and “half-wit.” All of these denote the connection between wit and common sense. The dimwit and the half-wit are of course deficient in such sense; to be at wit’s end denotes finding oneself in a situation in which normal common sense is of no avail. Today one is more likely to see wit applied as a label to public personalities who are thought to be clever; for example, that well-known wit…Joseph Epstein.

I have never thought myself a wit, but some years ago, in reviewing a book of mine on snobbery, William F. Buckley Jr. called me “perhaps the wittiest writer (working in his genre) alive, the funniest since Randall Jarrell.” The quotation has turned up as the last line in my Wikipedia entry, with the result that, on the rare occasions when I give a talk or lecture, I am generally introduced as—all qualifications dropped—“the wittiest writer alive.” When this occurs, I hasten to tell my audience that I hope they will not be disappointed when, after four or five minutes into my talk, they come to find Mr. Buckley’s generous contention not merely dubious but definitively disproved.

I wish it were otherwise, but I am not witty. What I believe I am is mildly charming. Charm is the ability to arouse approval for oneself, to seem socially adept. Wit is a more precise skill. Oscar Levant claimed never “to stoop to charm.” Unlike charming people, witty ones can offend, and often don’t care if they do. I myself prefer to be liked rather than admired for such shreds of wit as I do possess.

As a would-be charmer, I have over the years built up a store of anecdotes and fairly surefire jokes that I can trot out when needed. I can drop an interesting quotation with what I hope is lightness of touch. I am alert to the comedy of language and often play off its absurdities, subverting clichés, twisting idioms, doing English in foreign accents. Like the character Sloppy reading the newspapers in Our Mutual Friend, I “do the police in different voices.” I also have a taste for whimsy. Late one afternoon when my sons were growing up, I was at the stove making Italian meat sauce and asked them, as I put a spoonful of sugar into the pot, what movie my doing this reminded them of: the answer was Absorba the Grease after, of course, Zorba the Greek. (My children’s upbringing, plainly, wasn’t an easy one.) None of this, strictly speaking, is wit.

Wit, when available to me at all, is possible only when I can create it in tranquility, on the page, or now increasingly on the computer screen, where there is ample room for rehearsal, as aspiring but inadequate wits might think of revision. But wit in its sense of quick and amusing and often devastating riposte, is not my speciality. Esprit d’escalier, or staircase wit, the witty response that occurs to one too late, is for me rather closer to it.

During my last teaching days, in a course I taught on Henry James, I asked a student named Jonathan Stern to describe the character Gilbert Osmond from James’s The Portrait of a Lady. Without the least intent to offend his teacher or evoke laughter from his classmates, he declared Osmond “an asshole.” I seemed to be the only one in the room shocked by his response, and I told him, calmly, that I would allow each student in the course one such word, and he had now used up his allowance. Only later, leaving class, actually walking down the stairs, did it occur to me that what I should have said was, “I’m pleased, Mr. Stern, that I didn’t ask you to describe Oedipus Rex.”

I have been in the regular company of only one genuinely witty man, my friend Edward Shils. When I told Edward of a mutual acquaintance of ours having recently informed me that, in Prague, where he grew up, his father never shaved himself but always had a barber come in to do so, Edward replied, “You know, Joseph, the truth more likely is that his father shaved his mother.” I once introduced Edward to the English journalist Henry Fairlie. Edward mentioned that he had heard Fairlie had become a socialist, and asked him to explain how this came about. Fairlie replied that he owed his conversion to hearing Michael Harrington speak in Chicago. “Michael Harrington in Chicago?” said Edward. “Surely a case of worst comes to worst.” Of David Reisman, his colleague at the University of Chicago, who attempted to pass himself off as a WASP, Edward remarked, “I’ll say this for David, he’s never taken undue advantage of being Jewish.”

Edward Shils taught half the year at Cambridge in England, a country where the tradition for wit is stronger than it has been in America. Maurice Bowra exemplified high-table Oxbridge wit. When someone told Bowra that the woman he was courting, the niece of Sir Thomas Beecham, was a lesbian, Bowra, himself reputed to be homosexual, replied, “Buggers can’t be choosers.” Noël Coward noted that “having to read footnotes resembles having to go downstairs to answer the door while in the midst of making love.” Evelyn Waugh, surely the wittiest novelist of the past century, in World War II, coming out of a bunker during a German bombing of Yugoslavia, looked up at the sky raining enemy bombs and remarked, “Like everything German, vastly overdone.” Kingsley Amis said that “laziness has become the chief characteristic of journalism, displacing incompetence.” From Beyond the Fringe to Monty Python, English humor at its higher echelons featured wit.

Only a few traces of wit show up in Edward Shils’s writing. No one knew about it who didn’t know him personally; knowledge of his quick cleverness was restricted to his students and his friends. The great wits of the past century found means to have their witty remarks broadcast well beyond their social circle. Among the wits discussed in Errett’s Elements of Wit are Sydney Smith, Mark Twain, Oscar Wilde, Dorothy Parker, Groucho Marx, Winston Churchill, Mae West, George Bernard Shaw, Robert Benchley, and Oscar Levant. Missing are H.L. Mencken, W.C. Fields, Noël Coward, Billy Wilder, and George S. Kaufman. An obvious neurotic, Kaufman, when asked why he left psychotherapy after only a few sessions, claimed, “the guy asked too many goddamn personal questions.” A relentless philanderer, Kaufman told Irving Berlin that he liked his song “Always,” but would prefer it if he changed the title to “Thursdays.”

I learned about these Kaufman quips from a biography of Kaufman by Howard Teichmann. Many of Churchill’s best mots are recorded in other people’s memoirs. Oscar Wilde made a show of his epigrams, paradoxes, and comic aphorisms (“A cynic is someone who knows the price of everything and the value of nothing”) while on tour in America. Traveling round the United States, he put himself perpetually on exhibit, his witty remarks picked up by the press that accompanied him; they accompanied him, in fact, chiefly because his remarks made good copy. The wittiest things said during the 1920s and ’30s at the Algonquin Round Table found their way into Franklin Pierce Adams’s “Conning Tower” column in the old New York World and later the New York Herald-Tribune. Oscar Levant, who let it all hang out before the phrase was invented, made many of his more outlandish remarks on the old Jack Paar Show, and on his own talk show before he was fired for going too far with a joke about Arthur Miller and Marilyn Monroe, oral sex, and keeping kosher. Wits without fame do not get their brilliant lines recorded, at least not in the past they didn’t. The Internet, as we shall see, is changing this, at least somewhat.

Elements of Wit, like the Strunk and White book on composition after which it is titled, is pedagogical in intent. The book sets out on the project of teaching wit by precept and example. Along with offering mini-profiles of some famous wits of the past and present, Benjamin Errett (a Canadian journalist) provides discussion of the role of wit in improv theater; the effect of alcohol on lubricating and loosening wit; and the need for brevity, the soul, after all, of wit. He quotes from various studies on wit and humor; and, inevitably, as is de rigueur these days, he brings in far-from-convincing brain studies and ponders the connection of the physiology of the brain to the creation of wit.

At one point Errett provides a list of 11 contemporary wits. The list includes Russell Brand, Gail Collins, Louis C.K., Nora Ephron, Tina Fey, Christopher Hitchens, Fran Lebowitz, Steve Martin, Amy Poehler, Tom Stoppard, and Kanye West. The rapper Jay-Z, to whom he devotes several pages, is another of his models for wit in action.

Not all these contemporary wits pass Errett’s definition of wit as “spontaneous creation.” We learn that Steve Martin worked out his stand-up comedian’s bits over time, so that little of the finished product of his wit can be said to have been spontaneous. Much of Tina Fey’s wit was scripted for her television shows. Is Russell Brand sufficiently amusing to earn the title? Louis C.K. passes for witty if one’s taste runs to masturbation jokes. Jay-Z’s rap music, much of it created at the moment of recording, may be spontaneous, but does it truly qualify as witty? Lots of things—sarcasm, invective, obscenity—can be created spontaneously without being witty.

Would Christopher Hitchens have seemed witty without an English accent? Wasn’t Hitchens, a man who gave the title The Missionary Position to his book-length attack on Mother Teresa, more a provocateur than a wit? Is there a great difference between Nora Ephron’s complaining about age doing in her neck and the newspaper columnist Erma Bombeck’s writing about the travails of being a housewife—any difference, really, apart from Ephron having had a fancier address and a flashier social set? In the few interviews I have seen with Tom Stoppard, his seriousness easily eclipses his wit. Are these cavils merely? Or do they suggest the lowering of standards on what passes for wit in our time?

Another of Errett’s definitions of wit is “good sense that sparkles.” He prefers cheerful wit; like Joseph Addison, whom he quotes, his taste runs to wit that “gives delight and surprise.” Errett defines snark as wit that “scorches.” Yet much wit is dark, and lots of the richest wit is outrageous. Think of the late Sue Mengers, the movie agent, who walked into a less than exclusive Hollywood party and remarked to a friend: “Schindler’s B-list.” After the Charles Manson murders, Mengers is supposed to have told her client Barbra Streisand, “Don’t worry, honey, they’re only killing bit players.” Saul Bellow, whose propensity for saying witty things sometimes got him in trouble, wrote a story called “Him with His Foot in His Mouth,” about a man who regularly wounded people because he could not control making offensively witty remarks. The wittiest remark in the story belongs not to the story’s narrator but to an older scholar whose boredom is obvious when the narrator reads his scholarly article to him. The narrator asks if he is causing the scholar to fall asleep, to which the scholar answers, “No, you’re keeping me awake.”

Wit is meant to be pleasing, but as often as not it can be cruel. John Simon makes the point that humor is “basically good natured and often directed toward oneself,” while wit is “aggressive, often destructive…and almost always directed at others.” When Clare Boothe Luce held open a door for Dorothy Parker and said “Age before beauty,” Miss Parker, passing through, replied, “Pearls before swine.” Such examples of aggressive wit are generally the most memorable. What stays in the mind are the stabbing riposte, the ripping repartee, the punishing put-down.

Errett bridles at the thought that wit is no more than “clever nastiness.” In his view “wit is the thought process that generates truly funny observations, as well as the most incisive comments, lasting quips, and brilliant asides.” Perhaps his cheerful outlook on the subject of wit compelled him to neglect entirely Gore Vidal, a figure often on the list of contemporary wits. If Vidal had had a motto, it might have been, “If you can’t say something nasty, then say nothing at all.” But Vidal fails the first test of wittiness, which is unpredictability. Predictability is death for wit, and Vidal’s wit was always predictable. Apart from those of his mots devoted to slightly perverse sexual matters—“I am all for bringing back the birch, but only between consenting adults,” is an example—most of the rest are about the crummy, inane, deceitful plutocracy that for him was America. Vidal paraded this merchandise on every talk show that would have him. “I never miss a chance to have sex or appear on television” is another of his mots. One knew what was coming before he opened his mouth; it was only a question of how mean he would be.

Defying anticipation in a way that is both amusing and causing one’s auditors to take thought is one of the hallmarks of genuine wit. Of Doris Day, Oscar Levant remarked: “I knew her before she became a virgin.” Fran Lebowitz, remarking that it’s impossible not to notice that children in America are more and more protected and to a later and later age, claimed that “the man who invents the first shaving mirror for strollers is going to make a fortune.”

If asked to choose an ideal, a perfect, wit, my candidate would be Sydney Smith, the early-19th-century clergyman who was one of the founders of the Edinburgh Review. Errett devotes a few sparse paragraphs to Smith in his book, but not enough to capture the splendor of a true wit at work. The actress Fannie Kemble wrote that “the fanciful and inexhaustible humorous drollery of his [Smith’s] conversation among his intimates can never be adequately rendered or reproduced.” A young Benjamin Disraeli, himself a famously witty man, was once seated next to Sydney Smith at a dinner party and found him “delightful,” adding, “I don’t remember a more agreeable party.” Others reported that they could not remember what he said because in his company they laughed so much. Sydney Smith spoke almost exclusively in mots, lovely metaphors, witty formulations. He said of the garrulous Lord Macaulay that his conversation contained “some gorgeous flashes of silence.” He likened his life as a reviewer and sometimes polemicist to that of a razor, always “either in hot water or scrapes.” Of two women screaming insults at each other from their apartments across a narrow street, he said: “Those two women will never agree. They are arguing from different premises.”

Does wit come naturally, or can one acquire it through effort and training? The assumption behind Elements of Wit is that it can be acquired. “Creative spontaneity,” Errett writes, “takes practice.” Yet his book casts doubt on the notion that wit, even among the most famous wits, really is created spontaneously. Winston Churchill, he informs us, was a reader of Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations and in search of material for conversation sedulously read jokes columns in newspapers. “His magpie mind drew from books, film, media, and anywhere else he read, heard, or saw a line worth repeating.” Errett does not mention La Rochefoucauld, the world’s wittiest aphorist, who worked with his friend and lover Madame de Lafayette at burnishing his aphorisms before bringing them out for display in the salons of Mme. de Rambouillet and Mme. de Sablé, where they were further polished. Might it be that a great deal of what passes for wit—for, in Errett’s term, “spontaneous creation”—isn’t spontaneous at all but has been carefully worked up beforehand?

The leading forum for the display of wit in our days ought to be the television talk show. Yet one doesn’t think of any of the talk-show hosts, now and in the past, as especially witty, if only because all employed or currently employ a cadre of writers who supply them with much of the material that passes for their own wit, though some among them ad lib cleverly. The same, one suspects, may well be true of ostensibly witty talk-show guests, who are often coached about what questions they will be asked and what subjects they can expect to discuss.

Are dazzling wits possible in our day? No reason why they shouldn’t be, though how we might come to know about them is unclear. Might such a wit be someone out there sending witty tweets to friends? The form of the tweet, with its limit of 140 characters, could work to force a tweeter into concise wit. The closing pages of The Elements of Wit offer some amusing tweets. “So now Blagojevich has been double impeached, which sounds like a Ben & Jerry flavor” isn’t at all bad; nor is this, “the most beautiful tweet ever tweeted,” as chosen by Stephen Fry: “I believe we can build a better world! Of course, it’ll take a whole lot of rock, water & dirt. Also not sure where to put it.” I do not myself tweet—to do so would be unseemly in a man of my august age—but I have followed a couple of friends on Twitter, one of whose tweets are consistently amusing. If Twitter does create a new conveyance for wit, a new word for those who display their wit on it will be required—a twit-wit, perhaps.

As for whether wit can be taught, my own sense is that it cannot. Honed and sharpened it can be, but it has to be there to begin with. As Aristotle, in the Poetics, said about metaphor, so one might say about wit: “It is the one thing that cannot be learned; it is also a sign of genius.” Wit, in other words, is a gift. But without an interesting point of view, a detached angle on life, a wide culture, the gift will come to naught. Wit is the expression of those who understand and are able to formulate and deflate in a pleasing way what they see as pretension, false self-esteem, empty ambition, snobbery, and much else worth mocking in life. We need wits on the scene, like doctors on the case. Without them to remind us how absurd we can be, we fall into the grave danger of taking ourselves altogether too seriously.

 The Difference Between American and British Humour

It’s often dangerous to generalize, but under threat, I would say that Americans are more “down the line.” They don’t hide their hopes and fears. They applaud ambition and openly reward success. Brits are more comfortable with life’s losers. We embrace the underdog until it’s no longer the underdog.We like to bring authority down a peg or two. Just for the hell of it. Americans say, “have a nice day” whether they mean it or not. Brits are terrified to say this. We tell ourselves it’s because we don’t want to sound insincere but I think it might be for the opposite reason. We don’t want to celebrate anything too soon. Failure and disappointment lurk around every corner. This is due to our upbringing. Americans are brought up to believe they can be the next president of the United States. Brits are told, “It won’t happen for you.”

There’s a received wisdom in the U.K. that Americans don’t get irony. This is of course not true. But what is true is that they don’t use it all the time. It shows up in the smarter comedies but Americans don’t use it as much socially as Brits. We use it as liberally as prepositions in every day speech. We tease our friends. We use sarcasm as a shield and a weapon. We avoid sincerity until it’s absolutely necessary. We mercilessly take the piss out of people we like or dislike basically. And ourselves. This is very important. Our brashness and swagger is laden with equal portions of self-deprecation. This is our license to hand it out.

This can sometimes be perceived as nasty if the recipients aren’t used to it. It isn’t. It’s play fighting. It’s almost a sign of affection if we like you, and ego bursting if we don’t. You just have to know which one it is.

I guess the biggest difference between the U.S. version and the U.K. version of The Office reflected this. We had to make Michael Scott a slightly nicer guy, with a rosier outlook to life. He could still be childish, and insecure, and even a bore, but he couldn’t be too mean. The irony is of course that I think David Brent’s dark descension and eventual redemption made him all the more compelling. But I think that’s a lot more palatable in Britain for the reasons already stated. Brits almost expect doom and gloom so to start off that way but then have a happy ending is an unexpected joy. Network America has to give people a reason to like you not just a reason to watch you. In Britain we stop watching things like Big Brother when the villain is evicted. We don’t want to watch a bunch of idiots having a good time. We want them to be as miserable as us. America rewards up front, on-your-sleeve niceness. A perceived wicked streak is somewhat frowned upon.

Recently I have been accused of being a shock comic, and cruel and cynical. This is of course almost solely due to a few comments I made as host of last year’s Golden Globes. But nothing could be further from the truth.

I never actively try to offend. That’s churlish, pointless and frankly too easy. But I believe you should say what you mean. Be honest. No one should ever be offended by truth. That way you’ll never have to apologize. I hate it when a comedian says, “Sorry for what I said.” You shouldn’t say it if you didn’t mean it and you should never regret anything you meant to do. As a comedian, I think my job isn’t just to make people laugh but also make them think. As a famous comedian, I also want a strict door policy on my club. Not everyone will like what I say or find it funny. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. There are enough comedians who try to please everyone as it is. Good luck to them, but that’s not my game, I’m afraid.

I’m not one of those people who think that comedy is your conscience taking a day off. My conscience never takes a day off and I can justify everything I do. There’s no line to be drawn in comedy in the sense that there are things you should never joke about. There’s nothing that you should never joke about, but it depends what that joke is. Comedy comes from a good or a bad place. The subject of a joke isn’t necessarily the target of the joke. You can make jokes about race without any race being the butt of the joke. Racism itself can be the butt, for example. When dealing with a so-called taboo subject, the angst and discomfort of the audience is what’s under the microscope. Our own preconceptions and prejudices are often what are being challenged. I don’t like racist jokes. Not because they are offensive. I don’t like them because they’re not funny. And they’re not funny because they’re not true. They are almost always based on a falsehood somewhere along the way, which ruins the gag for me. Comedy is an intellectual pursuit. Not a platform.

As for cynicism, I don’t care for it much. I’m a romantic. From The Office, and Extras to The Invention Of Lying and Cemetery Junction, goodness and sweetness, honour and truth, love and friendship always triumph.

For me, humanity is king.

Oh and for the record I’d rather a waiter say, “Have a nice day” and not mean it, than ignore me and mean it.

Islam ist weniger eine Religion und mehr eine totalitäre Gesellschaftsordnung, eine Ideologie, die absoluten Gehorsam verlangt und keinen Widerspruch, keinerlei Kritik duldet und das Denken und Erkenntnis verbietet. Der wahre Islam ist ganz anders, wer ihn findet wird eine hohe Belohnung erhalten.

Wahnsinn bedeute, immer wieder das gleiche zu tun, aber dabei stets ein anderes Resultat zu erwarten.

Gutmenschen sind Menschen, die gut erscheinen wollen, die gewissenlos das Gewissen anderer Menschen zu eigenen Zwecken mit Hilfe selbst inszenierter Empörungen instrumentalisieren.

Irritationen verhelfen zu weiteren Erkenntnissen, Selbstzufriedenheit führt zur Verblödung,

Wenn ein Affe denkt, „ich bin ein Affe“, dann ist es bereits ein Mensch.

Ein Mensch mit Wurzeln soll zur Pediküre gehen.

Wenn jemand etwas zu sagen hat, der kann es immer sehr einfach sagen. Wenn jemand nichts zu sagen hat, der sagt es dann sehr kompliziert.

Sucht ist, wenn jemand etwas macht, was er machen will und sucht jemand, der es macht, daß er es nicht macht und es nicht machen will.

Sollen die Klugen immer nachgeben, dann wird die Welt von Dummen regiert. Zu viel „Klugheit“ macht dumm.

Wenn man nur das Schlechte bekämpft, um das Leben zu schützen, bringt man gar nichts Gutes hervor und ein solches Leben ist dann nicht mehr lebenswert und braucht nicht beschützt zu werden, denn es ist dann durch ein solches totales Beschützen sowieso schon tot. Man kann so viel Geld für Versicherungen ausgeben, daß man gar nichts mehr zum Versichern hat. Mit Sicherheit ist es eben so.

Zufriedene Sklaven sind die schlimmsten Feinde der Freiheit.

Kreativität ist eine Intelligenz, die Spaß hat.

Wen die Arbeit krank macht, der soll kündigen!

Wenn Deutsche über Moral reden, meinen sie das Geld.

Ein Mensch ohne Erkenntnis ist dann  lediglich ein ängstlicher, aggressiver, unglücklicher Affe.

Denken ist immer grenzüberschreitend.

Der Mob, der sich das Volk nennt, diskutiert nicht, sondern diffamiert.

Legal ist nicht immer legitim.

Wer nicht verzichten kann, lebt unglücklich.

Sogenannte Sozial-, Kultur-, Geisteswissenschaften, Soziologie, Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Psychoanalyse, sind keine Wissenschaften mehr, sondern immanent religiöse Kultpropheten, organisiert wie Sekten.

Ohne eine starke Opposition atrophiert jede scheinbare Demokratie zur Tyrannei, und ebenso eine Wissenschaft, zur Gesinnung einer Sekte.

Man kann alles nur aus gewisser Distanz erkennen, wer sich ereifert, empört, wer mit seiner Nase an etwas klebt, der hat die Perspektive verloren, der erkennt nichts mehr, der hat nur noch seine Phantasie von der Welt im Kopf. So entsteht Paranoia, die sich Religion, und Religion als Politik, sogar als Wissenschaft nennt.

Islamisten sind eine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche nicht gesehen. Juden sind keine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche gesehen. So funktioniert die Wahrnehmung von  Feiglingen.

Humorlose Menschen könner nur fürchten oder hassen und werden Mönche oder Terroristen.

Menschen sind nicht gleich, jeder einzelne Mensch ist ein Unikat.

Erkenntnis gilt für alle, auch für Muslime, Albaner, Frauen und Homosexuelle.

Islam gehört zu Deutschland, Judentum gehört zu Israel.

Der Konsensterror (Totalitarismus) ist in Deutschland allgegenwärtig.

Es wird nicht mehr diskutiert, sondern nur noch diffamiert.

Es ist eine Kultur des Mobs. Wie es bereits gewesen ist.

Harmonie ist nur, wenn man nicht kommuniziert.

Man soll niemals mit jemand ins Bett gehen, der mehr Probleme hat, als man selbst.

Man muß Mut haben, um witzig zu sein.

Dumm und blöd geht meistens zusammen.

Charlie Hebdo: solche Morde an Juden sind euch egal, mal sehen wie”angemessen”  ihr reagiert, wenn (wenn, nicht falls) eure Städte von Islamisten mit Kasam-Raketen beschossen werden.

Christopher Hitchens großartig: „In einer freien Gesellschaft hat niemand das Recht, nicht beleidigt zu werden.“

Je mehr sich jemand narzisstisch aufbläht, desto mehr fühlt er sich beleidigt und provoziert.

Das Problem mit den Islamisten in Europa soll man genauso lösen, wie es Europa für den Nahen Osten verlangt: jeweils eine Zweistaatenlösung, die Hälfte für Muslime, die andere Hälfte für Nicht-Muslime, mit einer gemeinsamen Hauptstadt.

Was darf Satire? Alles! Nur nicht vom Dummkopf verstanden werden, weil es dann keine Satire war.

Islam ist verantwortlich für gar nichts, Juden sind schuld an allem.

Islamisten sind Satanisten.

Leute fühlen sich immer furchtbar beleidigt, wenn man ihre Lügen nicht glaubt.

The New Totalitarianism

A dystopia (from the Greek δυσ- and τόπος, alternatively, cacotopia, kakotopia, or anti-utopia) is a community or society that is in some important way undesirable or frightening. It is literally translated as „not-good place“, an antonym of utopia. Such societies appear in many artistic works, particularly in stories set in a future. Dystopias are often characterized by dehumanization, totalitarian governments, environmental disaster, or other characteristics associated with a cataclysmic decline in society. Dystopian societies appear in many sub-genres of fiction and are often used to draw attention to real-world issues regarding society, environment, politics, economics, religion, psychology, ethics, science, and/or technology, which if unaddressed could potentially lead to such a dystopia-like condition.

Famous depictions of dystopian societies include R.U.R. (which introduced the concept of robots and the word „robot“ for the first time); Nineteen Eighty-Four, which takes place in a totalitarian invasive super state; Brave New World, where the society’s energy is forcibly directed into drug-addled consumerism and hedonism; Fahrenheit 451, where the state burns books to create apathy and disinterest in the general public; A Clockwork Orange, where the state uses psychological torture to reform violent youths; Blade Runner in which engineered „replicants“ infiltrate society and must be hunted down before they injure humans; The Matrix, in which the human species is trapped in a virtual reality world created by intelligent machines, The Hunger Games, in which the government controls its people by maintaining a constant state of fear through forcing randomly selected children to participate in an annual fight to the death; Logan’s Run, in which both population and the consumption of resources are maintained in equilibrium by requiring the death of everyone reaching a particular age; Soylent Green, where society suffers from pollution, overpopulation, depleted resources, poverty, dying oceans, a hot climate, and much of the population survives on processed food rations, including „soylent green“.

The word totalitarianism usually generates impressions of dictatorial systems which crush civic freedoms and negate the humanity of their subjects in an effort to achieve complete control. Images of barbed wire, jack-boots and thought-control are conjured up in our minds. 20th century literature has given us some powerful works of fiction which suggest a variety of possible totalitarian futures: one thinks immediately of Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World. Common to these dystopias (utopias which have collapsed into tyranny) is the absolutizing of the power of the State, or systems controlled by the State.

Totalitarianism invariably strives to do away with genuine absolutes and to establish false absolutes in their place. Genuine absolutes are fundamental, ultimate, unqualified truths, independent of the ebb and flow of cultures, fashions, myths and prejudices. An example of genuine moral absolutes is the Ten Commandments. An example of false absolutes can be found in Marx’s ideology, where a theory called dialectic is posited as the mechanism which determines human history—an “abstraction” that has resulted in hundreds of millions of violent deaths.

G.K. Chesterton wrote in his 1935 book, The Well and the Shallows:

“It is the State which changes; it is the State which destroys; it is nearly always the State which persecutes. The Totalitarian State is now making a clean sweep of all our old notions of liberty, even more than the French Revolution made a clean sweep of all the old ideas of loyalty. It is the Church that excommunicates; but in that very word implies that a communion stands open for a restored communicant. It is the State that exterminates; it is the State that abolishes absolutely and altogether; whether it is the American State abolishing beer, or the Fascist State abolishing parties; or the Hitlerite State abolishing almost everything but itself.”

Chesterton touches upon an important characteristic of totalitarian states. The absolute ruler always attempts to destroy diversity. He cannot rest content with a passive populace. As he extends his grasp into more and more aspects of human life he becomes hostile to everything outside of his own will. As his power becomes near absolute it grows increasingly negative, because by its very nature it must oppose what cannot be extinguished in the human person. It must seek at some point to destroy the inner impulse to genuine creativity which depends for its well-being on freedom from manipulation.

The tyrant in the beginning rarely looks like a monster. He usually appears to be the savior of his people, though once he has attained power he soon shows his hand—at root he merely wishes to accumulate as much power as possible in order to obtain an absolute security or glory for himself, and to enjoy it at any cost. This kind of tyrant is not difficult to identify. When he runs out of gasoline or bullets or wheat the people cast him off, because he is a monster who looks like a monster. He has blown his cover. More difficult to pin down and to throw off is the idealistic tyrant who expands his power in order to protect what he considers to be the good of his subjects. He will reduce crime and make the trains run on time. He will balance the budget and bring order and a measure of material plenty to the nation. He will labor to make a better citizen of the raw material of his subjects. There can be a reassuring sense of security in all this. We like dependable public services and an ordered economy, though we would, perhaps, remain uneasy about trading away certain freedoms. But it is precisely the elimination of personal responsibility which is the tyrant’s ultimate goal, for this is what he sees as our fatal flaw.

It must be understood that the highly motivated idealist is not merely interested in improving the exterior forms of society. He wishes to save us from ourselves. Of course, he will find that basic human nature is rather difficult to remold, and as time goes on he will need to continuously expand his power until his control approaches the level of totality. If he is clever at it and fills up the world with beautiful rhetoric, and takes care not to grossly infringe upon our pleasurable rights, and if, at the same time, he takes upon his own shoulders our unpleasant rights, the ones which demand effort and sacrifice, then he may get away with it. This is never more possible than in a historical period of extreme stress. In such a climate the lifting of our responsibilities is not felt as deprivation; it feels, rather, like relief from intolerable tensions. Somebody at last is doing something about the human condition! A sick society is getting therapy! A cancer patient puts himself into the hands of his doctor, so why shouldn’t a “dysfunctional” people entrust itself to its social or political physicians? Somewhere during the therapy there is a decisive transfer of power and responsibility. When this happens on a massive scale something is seriously amiss. There may not be brown-shirts and jackboots marching in the streets. No public book-burnings. No grotesque executions. In some cases there may even be no visible dictator, only a system or a social philosophy which permeates and controls everything. Indeed, the world may appear to be perfectly normal. The Catholic philosopher Josef Pieper points out that this is the most dangerous form of totalitarianism of all, almost impossible to throw off, because it never appears to be what, in fact, it is.

Both the monster tyrant and the “humanitarian” tyrant offer something that appears to be a good. Both, in the end, will exact a terrible price. The person who wishes to remain free must understand that he cannot and should not pay that price. In the beginning the payments may appear small and harmless enough. We are asked to compromise a little here, a little there, unsuspecting that eventually there will be no strength left to resist the betrayal of everything. Pope John Paul II once said, “I would a thousand times rather have a persecuted Church than a compromised Church.” The Church stands as the one defender of the entire range of human and divine absolutes in the world. She knows that if she wishes to remain free—that is, free in the fullest sense of the word, free to be completely herself, free to defend Love and Truth—she must be ever willing to be a sign of contradiction, and if necessary to accept that society will condemn her.

Christopher Dawson, in The Judgment of the Nations contrasted the collapse of the Roman Empire to the collapse of a Christian civilization. He believed that something far more ominous is at work in the latter:

“For the civilization which has been undermined, and is now threatened by total subversion, is a Christian civilization, built on the spiritual values and religious ideals of Saint Augustine and his like; and its adversary is not the simple barbarism of alien peoples who stand on a lower cultural level, but new Powers armed with all the resources of scientific technique, which are inspired by a ruthless will to power, that recognizes no law save that of their own strength.”

Dawson was referring to overt tyrannies. However, he went on to sound some additional warnings for us all:

“Thus, the situation that Christians have to face today has more in common with that described by the author of the Apocalypse than with the age of St. Augustine. The world is strong and it has evil masters. But these masters are not vicious autocrats like Nero and Domitian. They are the engineers of the mechanism of world power: a mechanism that is more formidable than anything the ancient world knew, because it is not confined to external means, like the despotisms of the past, but uses all the resources of modern psychology to make the human soul the motor of its dynamic purpose.”

Dawson was describing here the shape of a possible future, a global non-violent totalitarianism that is the most serious of all tyrannies, from the Christian viewpoint, because in it evil has become depersonalized, “separated from individual appetite and passion, and exalted . . . into a sphere in which all moral values are confused and transformed. The great terrorists . . . have not been immoral men, but rigid puritans who did evil coldly, by principle.”

In his fascinating book, Inside the Third Reich, Albert Speer, Hitler’s architect and armaments minister, wrote about the state of mind of the German people as Hitler rose to power. He says that most Germans disliked the sinister side of Hitler’s policies, but in a spirit of optimism, they assumed that he would leave behind his more unpleasant policies once he attained the dignity of high office. They overlooked his errors because they thought his form of law and order would be a lesser evil than the social disruption they were suffering during the nineteen twenties and thirties. By succumbing to the “lesser evil” argument, they brought upon the world an evil of epic proportions.

But what happens to the discernment of a people when a tyrant arrives without any of the usual sinister costumes of brutal dictators? What happens when the errors come in pleasing disguises, and are promoted by very fine people? Those living in such an environment have more than one difficulty to overcome in properly assessing what is happening. They find themselves within the events which are unfolding, and thus are faced with the problem of perception: how to see the hidden structure of their chaotic times, how to step outside of it and to view it objectively while remaining within it as a participant, as an agent for the good.

How are we Catholic people to do this if we are not rooted in the Truth? Will we be willing to compromise moral absolutes in the education of our children merely because attractive personalities, very intelligent idealists, say we should? Will the homogenization of our children’s minds be acceptable simply because we want the next generation to be nicely outfitted to cope with a profoundly disordered society? Will we be willing to sacrifice genuine diversity for the sake of the illusion of unity? Did our Catholic people help to elect a murderous social movement in this province and others, because its economic policies appeared to be kinder to the poor than the capitalist party that it replaced, forgetting the fact that abortion takes the life of far more children of the poor than children of the comfortable? Just as Dawson predicted, the confusion and transformation of moral values is seen widely as a moral cause.

How long will it take for our people to understand that when humanist sentiments replace moral absolutes, it is not long before very idealistic people begin to invade human families in the name of the family, and destroy human lives in the name of humanity? This is the idealist’s greatest temptation, the temptation by which nations and cultures so often fall. The wielder of power is deluded into thinking he can remold reality into a less unkind condition. If he succeeds in convincing his people of the delusion and posits for them an enemy of the collective good, then unspeakable evils can be released in society. Those who share a mass-delusion rarely recognize it as such, and can pursue the most heinous acts in a spirit of self-righteousness. Democracies are not immune from such delusions, although they tend to forms of oppression that are not overtly violent. Democracies in decline, however, will eventually revert to covert oppression and the overt, gradual erosion of human rights.

In his 1995 encyclical Evangelium Vitae, The Gospel of Life, John Paul II writes:

This is what is happening also at the level of politics and government: the original and inalienable right to life is questioned or denied on the basis of a parliamentary vote or the will of one part of the people—even if it is the majority. This is the sinister result of a relativism which reigns unopposed: the “right” ceases to be such, because it is no longer firmly founded on the inviolable dignity of the person, but is made subject to the will of the stronger part. In this way democracy, contradicting its own principles, effectively moves towards a form of totalitarianism. The State is no longer the “common home” where all can live together on the basis of principles of fundamental equality, but is transformed into a tyrant State, which arrogates to itself the right to dispose of the life of the weakest and most defenceless members, from the unborn child to the elderly, in the name of a public interest which is really nothing but the interest of one part. The appearance of the strictest respect for legality is maintained, at least when the laws permitting abortion and euthanasia are the result of a ballot in accordance with what are generally seen as the rules of democracy. Really, what we have here is only the tragic caricature of legality; the democratic ideal, which is only truly such when it acknowledges and safeguards the dignity of every human person, is betrayed in its very foundations: How is it still possible to speak of the dignity of every human person when the killing of the weakest and most innocent is permitted? In the name of what justice is the most unjust of discriminations practiced: some individuals are held to be deserving of defense and others are denied that dignity? When this happens, the process leading to the breakdown of a genuinely human co-existence and the disintegration of the State itself has already begun. . . .

In seeking the deepest roots of the struggle between the “culture of life” and the “culture of death”, we cannot restrict ourselves to the perverse idea of freedom mentioned above. We have to go to the heart of the tragedy being experienced by modern man: the eclipse of the sense of God and man, typical of a social and cultural climate dominated by secularism, which, with its ubiquitous tentacles, succeeds at times in putting Christian communities themselves to the test. Those who allow themselves to be influenced by this climate easily fall into a sad and vicious circle: when the sense of God is lost, there is also a tendency to lose the sense of man.

Our defense of reality itself, our resistance to various forms of totalitarianism, will demand both strong reactive measures and pro-active ones: an examination of conscience, a restoration of reverence for the “whole truth about man,” a return to Gospel principles in all aspects of our lives, and above all a profound conversion to worship of God. We must become a people who are in submissio, that is, submitted completely to the mission of the Church, in statu missionis. Thus, fully within the mainstream of grace, under the mantle of God’s divine authority, and uniting ourselves to the obedience of Christ on the Cross, we participate in the reversal of Adam’s sin. In this way we will find a personal, secret joy hidden within the crucifixion of our willfulness, a gateway to freedom, a dying that leads to life. And in doing so we will assist in the redemption of the world.

We must also support a widespread rebirth of those small, diverse, and beautiful works of man which retain their human dimensions and thereby foster the full meaning of the human person. There is need for a rediscovery of the family farm, cottage industries, new and old literature that is as vital as it is true, arts and crafts that are beautiful and made with love, schools small enough so that children can be known and nurtured as unique individuals, worker-owned co-operatives, small presses, libraries, community bees, works of mercy, discussion groups, etc.—these are only a beginning. We must learn and relearn that the only effective response to degeneracy, political, cultural, or otherwise, is to create an alternate culture that is so good, so beautiful, and so true that man is drawn back to his own true home.

The rediscovery of the family as a genuine social absolute is a crucial element of mankind’s rediscovery of this home. We must hope for it against all odds, but in the hoping we must have a realistic understanding of what those odds are. Pessimism is not Christian hope; nor is naïve optimism. We should not underestimate the capacity of modern man for self-delusion, especially when he has a great deal invested emotionally in the delusion. If awareness of the sacredness of the family has waned in our era, it is only partly due to attacks by exterior enemies. Catholics, to put it simply, have not valued Truth. In many of the particular churches we have been poorly educated in knowledge of the Truth and even more poorly educated in the spirituality of living the Truth. We did not see that our very lives hang upon the effective defense of Truth. As a result we have been fundamentally weakened and rendered virtually unprotected against the onslaught of propaganda from the media and the social sciences, which for many years have posited the origins of most human “dysfunction” in the internal politics of the family. Traditional marriage and family life are now commonly considered to be a form of oppression, even bondage. This, coupled to a loss of the sense of sin, has created a generation in which men and women no longer feel ennobled by self-sacrifice and the honoring of commitments. Nor do they feel endangered by the world of evil, by the possibility of personal slavery to invisible forces or to their own fallen natures. It is difficult for them to imagine that a pagan state might one day reinstitute an exterior form of slavery (although it would call it by a more attractive name). In his l930 essay “The New Paganism,” Hilaire Belloc noted that the liberal mind always abhors slavery in theory, but in the future, when liberalism has brought about the return of paganism, it will shortly thereafter resurrect the grand old institution of . . . slavery. However, he suggests, it will then be called “permanent employment.” Most people will have become unable to recognize that it is, in fact, what it is.

The supposed rationality of the idealist is perhaps the worst aspect of his condition, for it renders him less capable of pausing for a moment of reflection on what is real, or experiencing a healthy skirmish with self-doubt. It is this invincible self-righteousness which should alert us to the possibility that we may be living in the preliminary stages of a massive shift to totalitarian Statism on every level of society—including our religious institutions. If so, what are its exact parameters? How far will it go to usurp the perennial rights and duties of man? And if it is going to go very far (which is not yet certain) how do we stand in its path and resist it?

There are no precise blueprints of totalitarianism, for by its nature, even in its exercise of power, it is a shifting mirage. It does not know what it is, because it has no real absolutes on which to stand still and to know itself. It is urgent, therefore, that we recognize it for what it is, wherever it takes on a new form and attempts to dominate the human community. But how are we to accurately identify a force which appears in pleasing shapes and absorbs institutions with hardly an indiscretion? There are some traits which are common to violent and nonviolent forms of totalitarianism alike. The former justifies its harsh measures in the name of a so-called greater good—usually “the good of the people.” Soft totalitarianism is not fundamentally different in this regard, although its invasion of the rights and duties of man are executed with somewhat more diplomacy. We must remember here that in the beginning most oppressive regimes do not begin with overt oppression; in their early stages they appear as liberators. But when the moral foundations have crumbled under the euphoric advance of theory, it is only a matter of time before the living reality works out its awful consequences in practice. It bears repeating that this form is in the long run more destructive of the family, for it preserves the illusion of freedom. It directs its subjects to many roads, but the roads do not lead anywhere. It creates an impression of a broader world, but it is a vast prison, on the borders of which are impenetrable walls—impenetrable most of all because its residents have come to believe that there is nothing beyond it. It maintains power by continuously shifting the ground on which its subjects stand. Right, wrong, good, evil, and the identity of persons and things are each re-examined in an ongoing inquisition.

In his 1993 encyclical Veritatis Splendor, The Splendor of Truth, John Paul II warns of the consequences of sliding into this moral relativism:

Today, when many countries have seen the fall of ideologies which bound politics to a totalitarian conception of the world—Marxism being the foremost of these—there is no less grave a danger that the fundamental rights of the human person will be denied and that the religious yearnings which arise in the heart of every human being will be absorbed once again into politics. This is the risk of an alliance between democracy and ethical relativism, which would remove any sure reference point from political and social life, and on a deeper level make the acknowledgment of truth impossible. Indeed, “if there is no ultimate truth to guide and direct political activity, then ideas and convictions can easily be manipulated for reasons of power. As history demonstrates, a democracy without values easily turns into open or thinly disguised totalitarianism.”

Clearly, the Holy Father is not saying that Christians should abandon politics, for elsewhere he urges us to involve ourselves directly in the political process. He is here warning mankind against the folly of making politics into a religion that would displace the absolute rights of God and morality. The danger of this is so immediate that we can now reply to Marxism’s famous sneer, “Religion is the opiate of the masses,” with the more accurate observation that the politics of manipulation is the opiate of romantic intellectuals. Have we arrived at the stage where the politics of manipulation, and the manipulation of politics, is indeed drugging the people of the traditionally democratic nations? Consider that in the present day West, the arts, the media, the courts, education, psychology, sociology and anthropology and their hybrid disciplines, have contributed to a redefinition of the human person. Judging by the literature and the rhetoric coming out of these seemingly disparate movements, they have made a unanimous leap of faith: the restoration of man, apparently, now largely depends on the restructuring of behaviour and personality.

In his masterful essay on education, The Abolition of Man, C. S. Lewis pointed out that man’s power to make of himself what he pleases really means the power of some men to make of other men what they please. In other words, the human person will be increasingly perceived as a cell in a collective, needing not so much redemption by conversion as re-education and rehabilitation. Lewis foresaw that programs of reform would be developed and managed by a new class which he called The Conditioners. They will not be bad men, he advised. They will be highly motivated, and in fact will see themselves as the producers of motivation. They will become more and more dangerous as they are “armed with the powers of an omni-competent state and an irresistible scientific technique.” Their primary point of focus will be the reconstruction of human conscience: “They know how to produce conscience and decide what kind of conscience they will produce.” They themselves are outside, above, the dictates of the very conscience they produce, yet they consider themselves “the servants and guardians of humanity.”

Lewis observed the growth of this phenomenon from a Christian perspective, but there were non-Christian minds of his generation who also saw it developing. Aldous Huxley, in Brave New World Revisited (l958), said that the totalitarianism he had foreseen in l931 was materializing in the Western world at a much faster rate than he had thought possible. In Brave New World he had predicted a society in which the family, religion, language and art had been neutered and all conflicts eliminated by genetic engineering. He portrayed a perfect synthesis of technology and paganism. In Revisited he had come to believe that the totalitarianism of the immediate future would be less visibly violent than that of the Hitlers and Stalins, but it would create a society “painlessly regimented by a corps of highly trained social engineers.” He maintained that in such a society “democracy and freedom will be the theme of every broadcast and editorial,” but the underlying substance would be a seemingly benign totalitarianism. Huxley’s otherwise perceptive book was itself a victim of the modern misunderstanding of authority. He could not see the connection between his own brand of liberalism and the world it was helping to create. The book is marred by his prejudice against the Church, which he lumps together with Marxism and Fascism. George Orwell makes the same mistake in his famous essay “Politics and the English Language.” Like so many modern anti-totalitarians, they failed to distinguish between raw power and responsible exercise of authority. We should note their failure carefully, for if even the most honest and courageous minds in the secular camp cannot grasp such basic distinctions, then late Western man is in grave trouble.

Modern secularists, regardless of how articulate they may be, are very often victims of one-dimensional thinking. In Mere Christianity C.S. Lewis points out:

“Christianity thinks of human individuals not as mere members of a group or items in a list, but as organs in a body—different from one another and each contributing what no other could. When you find yourself wanting to turn your children, or pupils, or even your neighbors, into people exactly like yourself, remember that God probably never meant them to be that. You and they are different organs, intended to do different things. On the other hand, when you are tempted not to bother about someone else’s troubles because they are ‘no business of yours’, remember that though he is different from you he is part of the same organism as you. If you forget that he belongs to the same organism as yourself you will be come an Individualist. If you forget that he is a different organ from you, if you want to suppress differences and make people all alike, you will become a Totalitarian. But a Christian must not be either a Totalitarian or an Individualist.

There is a dangerous crack in the mind of modern man. In his supposed love for liberty and hatred of tyranny, he ignores the yawning crevasse which has opened up between freedom and responsibility. Unless those two are bridged by moral absolutes, he must eventually fall into the abyss, dragging his society in after him. In doing so he may unwittingly inflict a totalitarianism more complete than the full frontal attacks of monsters like Hitler and Stalin. The straw man of an “Inquisitional Catholic Church” lurks like a bogey in his subconscious; it does not impress him that the Roman Catholic Church has functioned for more than a century solely as a spiritual authority. It has no police, no armies, only the force of Truth and Love operating in the consciences of men. Veritas and Caritas, the Church knows, are the only real guarantees of social and individual freedoms. Curiously, it is her persistence in this regard which is found most objectionable to the modern mind, and especially to the totalitarian mind, violent and non-violent alike. The Catholic Church is portrayed on many levels of culture (including arts, communications media, education, and politics) as the monolithic structure thath produces oppressed and oppressive personalities. Modern liberalism in its secular and religious mutations is creating this universal impression. The world it is forming is in an agony of moral and spiritual sterility. Truth is made relative, undependable. Love is eroded in the name of love, communication rendered pointless in the name of “openness,” human life is devalued (being itself is despised) in the name of “quality of life.” We swim in a tide of such ominous symptoms but we have come to think of them as “normal.” We assume that the barbaric and the diabolical will be restrained by the democratic process. This is colossally naïve. Not only does it fly in the face of the very informative events which have taken place in our century, it ignores some key warning bells which are ringing here and there in the Western world.

We are at a turning point in history. The extraordinary pontificate of John Paul II is drawing many souls back to God, and even some nations to reflection on the moral absolutes and the meaning of man. The Church has all the resources necessary to restore man to his sense of purpose and identity. Yet, in the exercise of the ecclesial life of the West a kind of schizophrenia continues: we pay lip service to the Truth, and go on to do what we feel like. We say “Yes” and do “No,” but cushion the disobedience with subtly nuanced theology. The magisterial authority of the teaching Church is ignored while near-infallibility is conferred upon academic experts and committees.

Crucial choices have arrived and more are approaching. The abortion and euthanasia issues are the most ugly of these crises, but they are symptoms of something much deeper. We face a situation similar to the crisis which Christian Germany reached when the National Socialists enacted the racial laws, when state-sanctioned evil was funded by a large number of its citizenry who regarded the acts they were paying for through taxes to be crimes. Is this acceptable merely because the state or that elusive “voice of the people” has decided that the Jew or the pre-birth child is not quite human? And in a few short years will the orthodox Catholic or Christian be considered “an enemy of the people?” And will the family which fails to conform to state-defined notions of health be categorized as “dysfunctional,” and thus undeserving of custody of their children? If we should wake up some morning to find that a massive infrastructure of Conditioners is proceeding with the reconditioning of society—in the name of the people, in the name of the family, in the name of the child—who then will judge the State, and who will judge the people? Will we look back upon the present as the last brief period in which it was still possible to reverse the tide?

Is this a paranoiac nightmare or the shape of the world materializing under our very eyes? The objective signs should be sufficient to at least raise the necessary questions. Our pogroms and our crystalnachts are hidden away in clinics and hospitals. The people of the West are a nice people. An idealistic people. But note carefully the public rhetoric, note how the destruction of a child, the violation of conscience, the undermining of personal responsibility, the steady elimination of diversity, are lauded as steps in the protection of rights and freedoms. Have we reached that point to which Dawson, Pieper, Huxley, and Belloc referred? If it is true that rhetoric about freedom and democracy proliferates as the real thing declines, then the Western world has entered a period of institutionalized unreality.

Soft totalitarianism

The most interesting aspect of the New Right is that, in following Vaclav Havel, it has diagnosed “soft totalitarianism”: the absolute state administered not by its police force, but by its citizens. Citizens turn each other in for rewards, whether official or simply social.

Soft social forces like this can work in a positive way. If there is a neighborhood pedophile, having people come together and remove that person is a benefit to all. However, we switched to organized government long ago because vigilante justice and mob retribution are too often misused or inaccurate, as happened in the Salem witch trial or when online user groups play detective.

In the case of soft totalitarianism however the subject matter is not something as natural as beating down predators. Rather it is the hunting down and elimination of all “politically incorrect” viewpoints. Consider the term “political correctness”: it literally means adjusting everything we say and do to fit with the political ideology of our time. It is the opposite of “think for yourself,” or even “think.” It is the jackboot slamming on the face of humanity, but within our own minds. Why enforce with police, or even courts, when you can get the population to panic instead and flee from any “bad” thoughts, flinging feces at the person implicated?

Soft totalitarianism succeeds because it taps into our instincts going back to our glorious Simian heritage. Monkeys live in “troops,” or small groups like tribes but less strictly associated with heritage. If one monkey comes down with a disease, the other monkeys will throw stones at it and drive it out of the troop. Thus in monkey society, the primary social concern is: where do I rank in the troop, aka how close am I to getting thrown out? Humans have adopted this into in-group/out-group logic within a modern society united by nothing but political-economic ideology; when people have nothing in common with each other, the instant the crowd turns on someone they will have no compunction about destroying that person.

And this requires zero intervention from government. It’s “freedom,” after all, to form a mob and go after people so long as you don’t literally murder them. This is what happened to Mozilla CEO Brendan Eich, who has driven out of the troop not for hating gays, but for not supporting gay marriage. He did nothing affirmative against gays; he denied that they should have a right historically extended to heterosexuals. The Crowd gathered and deposed him. From Mozilla’s press release:

Mozilla prides itself on being held to a different standard and, this past week, we didn’t live up to it. We know why people are hurt and angry, and they are right: it’s because we haven’t stayed true to ourselves.

We didn’t act like you’d expect Mozilla to act. We didn’t move fast enough to engage with people once the controversy started. We’re sorry. We must do better.

Brendan Eich has chosen to step down from his role as CEO. He’s made this decision for Mozilla and our community.

Mozilla believes both in equality and freedom of speech. Equality is necessary for meaningful speech. And you need free speech to fight for equality. Figuring out how to stand for both at the same time can be hard.

The rest is more of the same groveling.

What does soft totalitarianism mean?

First, it means that any dissent with be met with destruction of your livelihood. The only people with true free speech will be billionaires, because they do not require income. Anyone else who speaks up will be driven out of his job; anyone who aids him will be driven out of her job. Anyone who speaks up in her defense will be driven out of his job, in turn. You are the diseased monkey, and the only permissible act is to throw stones at you. We have un-done civilization itself and reverting to witch hunts and lynch mobs.

Second, it means that our society is entirely inwardly-focused. Those who can create things, like Brendan Eich who guided the development of JavaScript, are secondary to those with the right opinions. The resulting hybrid of corruption and ideological nepotism ensures that soon we will have Beautiful People in our elites everywhere, but that they will be useless. Sure, they can memorize instructions and repeat variations on actions from the past. That’s why they’re all so good at developing web apps despite the crushing tedium of doing so. But when it comes to making strategy decisions, or inventing actual new technology, they will be lost. We have replaced the innovators and their politically incorrect opinions with a herd of politically correct but fundamentally useless people.

If you wonder what brings down empires, it is this internal policing of reality. The Soviet Union fell because it was politically incorrect to say that fewer beets had been grown that what the Five Year Plan said should be grown, thus people simply lied. They faked it. Ancient Greece faded from history because they executed philosophers who spoke up for the truth when it was politically incorrect. Ancient Rome became decadent and unable to defend itself because of its own internal system of ideological nepotism based on praising Rome, rather than acknowledging its problems and fixing them. Those who spotted problems were attacked in a “kill the messenger” fashion. The same is true here.

Brendan Eich was a messenger for our society. He dared to differ from the herd on a few crucial points, and for one of those, they attempted to destroy him. When this sort of behavior becomes the norm, you have a society that insists on programming itself toward conformity and ignoring serious warnings about its socially-correct but realistically-incorrect ideals. At that point, the only missing ingredient is time, as the nation waits for the Vandals to finally appear and enforce the reality principle with swords and fire.

Antisemitismus ist, wenn man Juden, Israel übelnimmt, was man anderen nicht übelnimmt.

Der Nicht-Antisemit ist ein Antisemit, der nach der derzeitigen deutschen Rechtsprechung, Israel, Juden diffamiert, diskriminiert, delegitimiert, jedoch nicht expressis verbis das Ziel der dritten Reichs, den Holocaust, die Judenvernichtung, befürwortet.

Islam ist weniger eine Religion und mehr eine totalitäre Gesellschaftsordnung, eine Ideologie, die absoluten Gehorsam verlangt und keinen Widerspruch, keinerlei Kritik duldet und das Denken und Erkenntnis verbietet. Der wahre Islam ist ganz anders, wer ihn findet wird eine hohe Belohnung erhalten.

Wahnsinn bedeute, immer wieder das gleiche zu tun, aber dabei stets ein anderes Resultat zu erwarten.

Gutmenschen sind Menschen, die gut erscheinen wollen, die gewissenlos das Gewissen anderer Menschen zu eigenen Zwecken mit Hilfe selbst inszenierter Empörungen instrumentalisieren.

Irritationen verhelfen zu weiteren Erkenntnissen, Selbstzufriedenheit führt zur Verblödung,

Wenn ein Affe denkt, „ich bin ein Affe“, dann ist es bereits ein Mensch.

Ein Mensch mit Wurzeln soll zur Pediküre gehen.

Wenn jemand etwas zu sagen hat, der kann es immer sehr einfach sagen. Wenn jemand nichts zu sagen hat, der sagt es dann sehr kompliziert.

Sucht ist, wenn jemand etwas macht, was er machen will und sucht jemand, der es macht, daß er es nicht macht und es nicht machen will.

Sollen die Klugen immer nachgeben, dann wird die Welt von Dummen regiert. Zu viel „Klugheit“ macht dumm.

Wenn man nur das Schlechte bekämpft, um das Leben zu schützen, bringt man gar nichts Gutes hervor und ein solches Leben ist dann nicht mehr lebenswert und braucht nicht beschützt zu werden, denn es ist dann durch ein solches totales Beschützen sowieso schon tot. Man kann so viel Geld für Versicherungen ausgeben, daß man gar nichts mehr zum Versichern hat. Mit Sicherheit ist es eben so.

Zufriedene Sklaven sind die schlimmsten Feinde der Freiheit.

Kreativität ist eine Intelligenz, die Spaß hat.

Wen die Arbeit krank macht, der soll kündigen!

Wenn Deutsche über Moral reden, meinen sie das Geld.

Ein Mensch ohne Erkenntnis ist dann  lediglich ein ängstlicher, aggressiver, unglücklicher Affe.

Denken ist immer grenzüberschreitend.

Der Mob, der sich das Volk nennt, diskutiert nicht, sondern diffamiert.

Legal ist nicht immer legitim.

Wer nicht verzichten kann, lebt unglücklich.

Sogenannte Sozial-, Kultur-, Geisteswissenschaften, Soziologie, Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Psychoanalyse, sind keine Wissenschaften mehr, sondern immanent religiöse Kultpropheten, organisiert wie Sekten.

Ohne eine starke Opposition atrophiert jede scheinbare Demokratie zur Tyrannei, und ebenso eine Wissenschaft, zur Gesinnung einer Sekte.

Man kann alles nur aus gewisser Distanz erkennen, wer sich ereifert, empört, wer mit seiner Nase an etwas klebt, der hat die Perspektive verloren, der erkennt nichts mehr, der hat nur noch seine Phantasie von der Welt im Kopf. So entsteht Paranoia, die sich Religion, und Religion als Politik, sogar als Wissenschaft nennt.

Islamisten sind eine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche nicht gesehen. Juden sind keine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche gesehen. So funktioniert die Wahrnehmung von  Feiglingen.

Humorlose Menschen könner nur fürchten oder hassen und werden Mönche oder Terroristen.

Menschen sind nicht gleich, jeder einzelne Mensch ist ein Unikat.

Erkenntnis gilt für alle, auch für Muslime, Albaner, Frauen und Homosexuelle.

Islam gehört zu Deutschland, Judentum gehört zu Israel.

Der Konsensterror (Totalitarismus) ist in Deutschland allgegenwärtig.

Es wird nicht mehr diskutiert, sondern nur noch diffamiert.

Es ist eine Kultur des Mobs. Wie es bereits gewesen ist.

Harmonie ist nur, wenn man nicht kommuniziert.

Realitätsverlust beschreibt den geistigen Zustand einer Person, welche nicht (mehr) in der Lage ist, die Situation, in der sie sich befindet, zu begreifen. Ihr werdet also von Wahnsinnigen regiert und durch deren Massenmedien manipuliert.

Der Totalitarismus kann nur besiegt werden kann, wenn man den Mut hat, die Dinge beim richtigen Namen zu nennen, so wie sie sind. Politischen Korrektheit verhindert es, fördert den Totalitarismus und ist politische Feigheit und politische Lüge.

Die Auslöschung: Islam ist wie die Sonne, wer ihm zu nahe kommt, der verbrennt darin selbst und fackelt den Rest der Welt mit ab.

Islam will keine Unterwerfung! Islam will Sieg, Vernichtung und Auslöschung.

You can recognize everything from a certain distance only, who is zealous, outraged, who sticks his nose in something, this one has lost the perspective, he recognizes anything more, he has only his imagination of the world in his head. This creates paranoia, which is called religion, and a religion as politics, even as a science.

Islamists are a real danger, therefore they will not be seen as such. Jews are not a danger, therefore they are seen as such. It is how the perception by cowards functions.

Christmas truce of 1914 was broken when German snipers killed two British soldiers

A previously untold account of Christmas Day casualties has now come to light in the Herts at War project, an exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the war

German snipers shot and killed two British soldiers while the famous Christmas Day truce of 1914 broke out around them, it can be revealed 100 years on.

The historic cease fire which saw men from both sides emerge from their trenches to exchange seasonal greetings and play games of football is one of the most enduring images of the First World War.

But while the remarkable gesture of goodwill spread to many parts along the Western Front, the friendly festivities stopped half-a-mile short of the Rue De Bois near the French village of Festubert.

There, the peace of Christmas morning was shattered by the piercing, solitary shot of a sniper’s rifle fired from a German trench.

Private Percy Huggins, who was on sentry duty at a forward listening post just 20 yards from the enemy, was killed with a single bullet to the head.

News of the 23-year-old soldier’s death enraged his comrades of D company Hertfordshire regiment, especially his platoon Sergeant Tom Gregory.

The experienced soldier demanded he take Pte Huggins‘ place so he could avenge his comrade’s death. He immediately set about scanning the frost-covered ground before identifying the sniper, who he took out with a single shot.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t the end of the deadly exchange. Sgt Gregory continued scouring the enemy lines and located a second sniper in his sights.

But the German marksman had already spotted him and in a split-second action, he shot and killed Sgt Gregory.

The two British men made up the 149 Commonwealth servicemen who lost their lives on December 25, 1914, although many of those died of previously-inflicted wounds.

And while the incredible stories of a truce and fraternisation filtered back to Britain in the days afterwards, the families of Pte Huggins and Sgt Gregory received the devastating news that they had been killed in action.

The previously untold account of the Christmas Day casualties has now come to light after the family of Pte Huggins offered up his letters home from the trenches to the Herts at War project, an exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the war.

It prompted researcher Dan Hill to study military records and regimental diaries which revealed the full tragic tale, which started hours earlier with the British responding to the German overtures for a truce by shooting at their lanterns.

Mr Hill said: „There is no doubt that a truce of sorts took place in multiple points along the line of trenches forming in France and Belgium.

„These men did shake hands and exchange gifts and wished each other a Merry Christmas.

„Less than a mile to the north of the Rue De Bois, we know the men of the 1st North Staffordshire Regiment took part in a truce and one also seems to have taken place to the south as well.

„Many men used the pause in fighting as a time to collect and bury the dead that lay about in No Man’s land.

„The truce probably bypassed the Hertfordshire Regiment because they were with the Guards Brigade who were incredibly professional and were highly unlikely to have fraternised.

„The story Percy and Tom’s tragic demise on that day serves to highlight that December 25, 1914, was just another day on the Western Front for some.

„To think that Mrs Huggins, Mrs Gregory and the mother of one German soldier enjoyed their Christmas at home unaware at that time of what had befallen their sons.“

At the age of 36, Sgt Gregory, from Watford, was a veteran of the Boer War and became a postman before he re-joined the army in 1914.

He was married to wife Jeanette and they had seven children; Charles, Evelyn, Bill, Doris, Herbert, Fred and Lille who was born on December 18, 1914, a week before his death.

Pte Huggins, from Ware, Hertfordshire, worked in his family’s upholstery business before he joined the Hertfordshire Regiment, which was one of the first Territorial Army units to be called up to the regular army in the First World War.

In November 1914 the men joined up with the illustrious Guards Brigade and sailed to France and were soon in action at the first Battle of Ypres.

They then left frontline duties for a month’s rest before returning to the trenches on the evening of Christmas Eve.

Soon afterwards Pte Huggins wrote his last, poignant letter home to his mother, Agnes, a widow bringing up seven children by herself back in England.

He thanked her for sending him a Christmas pudding which he explained he would have to eat cold but was still very much looking forward to it.

Clearly missing his family, he wrote: „I know you all must miss me and no doubt can to some extent realise what my feelings are for I cannot express them.

„I long for the day when this terrible conflict will be ended. You consider war a terrible thing but imagination cannot reach far enough for the horrors of warfare that can be seen on the battlefield are indescribable and I pray this may be the last war that will ever be.“

He explained he was proud to serve his King and country, adding: „I can only hope by the grace of God to acquit myself honourably and be permitted to return to all the dear ones in safety.

„I have already asked, dear mum, that you will spend as happy a Xmas as possible and I will do the same.“

Shortly before dawn on Christmas Day, Corporal Clifford Lane, of H Company Hertfordshire regiment, recalled how the Germans hoisted their lanterns above the trenches and called out to the British as a overture for a temporary truce.

The British responded by shooting at the lights, putting an end to any prospect of a Christmas Day ceasefire – one that could have spared the lives of Pte Huggins and Sgt Gregory.

Speaking in an interview in 1983, Cpl Lane that Mr Hill has now uncovered, he said: „There was a great deal of commotion going on in the German front line 150 yards away. After a few moments there were lighted objects raised above the German parapet, looking like Chinese lanterns to us.

„The Germans were shouting over to our trench. We were ordered to open rapid fire which we did.

„The Germans did not reply to our fire and carried on with their celebrations. They ignored us and were having a very fine time indeed and we continued in our wet trenches trying to make the most of it.

„They did make overtures but the Guards Brigade had the highest discipline in the army and you couldn’t expect them to fraternise at all and that is why we were ordered to open fire.

„Apparently regular troops did respond to their overtures and engaged in this truce.

„I greatly regretted it afterwards because it would have been a good experience.“

The regiment ate a Christmas breakfast of bread and jam, cheese and a piece of cold bacon. By the time the men tucked into their dinner of cold meats and Christmas pudding, Pte Huggins and Sgt Gregory were dead.

In his diaries called ‚Twenty-two Months Under Fire‘ published in 1917, Brigadier General Henry Page-Croft, who was second in command of the Hertfordshire Regiment, wrote: „Early in the day I got news that a lad who lived in my native town in Hertfordshire had been killed by a bullet whilst on sentry in the sap (small listening post) and then it was that a sergeant in his company anxiously asked and received leave to go up and take his place.

„The sergeant, who was a good shot, avenged the boy by killing the German sniper; but shortly afterwards a bullet through the brain sent him to join his young comrade.

„After this we began to study the art of sniping and the tactics of the hunter were added to the science of shooting.“

It is thought the families of both soldiers received news of their deaths some time in early January.

The two men were buried side by side at Le Touret Military Cemetery in Bethune, France.

Sgt Gregory’s granddaughter Audrey McLachlan, whose late mother was his eldest daughter Evelyn, said: „My mother once told me how my grandfather came home on leave in 1914 and he gave her a little girl’s tea service.

„She was running inside with it all excited and she fell over and broke it.

„She said she never really got over that because that was the last time she saw her father.“

Mrs McLachlan, 80, from Watford, Herts, added: „A relative researched the army records some years ago and we knew then that Percy Huggins and my grandfather were killed by two German snipers on Christmas morning.

„Percy must have been a close friend of my grandfather. In hindsight, it was a very brave but foolish thing for him to have done but at least he was killed quickly and cleanly and was saved the misery of the next three years in trenches.

„With this year being the 100th anniversary of the truce and the Sainsbury’s Christmas advert being on, people naturally talk about this wonderful event but to me it will always be the day my grandfather was killed.

„It was a big theatre of war and the truce didn’t happen in every single location.“

About 20 years ago Mrs McLachlan took her late auntie Lille – Sgt Gregory’s youngest child – to France to see his grave, a visit which triggered a remarkable coincidence.

She said: „Afterwards, we signed the visitors book and the very next day a great-nephew of Percy Huggins visited his grave which of course is next to my grandfather’s.

„He saw our names in the book and got in contact with us afterwards.

„My grandmother never really spoke about it afterwards, even at Christmas time.She has seven children and had to work all the hours god sent.“

Ferguson, USA – ein jugendlicher Schwarzer stirbt durch die Kugel eines weißen Polizisten. Das Urteil steht in Deutschland damit schon fest: der 18-jährige Michael Brown ist ein typisches Opfer des typischen weißen US-Rassismus geworden, der alltäglich auf Amerikas Straßen einen hohen Blutzoll hauptsächlich unter Afro-Americans fordert. Weiße Kugeln, schwarzes Blut! Ist das so?

Leider – oder besser: gottseidank! – ist dieses Bild komplett falsch. Vorausgesetzt, man vertraut den offiziellen Erkenntnissen der US-Regierung.

Überraschenderweise ist das US-Justizministerium nämlich schon vor drei Jahren zu einem gänzlich anderen Ergebnis gekommen. Es steht in einem offiziellen Bericht des Ministeriums vom Nov. 2011, auf die sich auch New Yorks Ex-Bürgermeister Rudy Giuliani kürzlich auf CNN bezog und der dort Ferguson zu einer “Ausnahme” erklärte:

Unfortunately – or rather, thank God! – This is completely wrong. Assuming you trust the official findings of the US government.
Surprisingly, the US Department of Justice is in fact came to a completely different conclusion three years ago. It is an official report of the Ministry dating from November:

Washington (CNN) — Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani says the controversy surrounding the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown, who was fatally shot by a white police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, does not exemplify a larger national problem.

„93 percent of blacks are killed by other blacks,“ Giuliani said on NBC’s „Meet the Press.“ „We’re talking about the exception here.“

„What about the poor black child that is killed by the other black child? Why aren’t you protesting that?“

In a heated exchange Sunday with academic and radio host Michael Eric Dyson, Giuliani suggested that the white police officer who fatally shot Brown in mid-August shouldn’t be the focus of the nation’s attention.

„We are talking about the significant exception,“ Giuliani said. „I’d like to see the attention paid to that, that you are paying to this.“

Giuliani went on to explain that he and other New York City mayors have worked hard to make New York Police Department „as proportionate“ as possible to reflect the racial makeup of the city.

In response, Dyson called Giuliani’s comparison „a false equivalency.“

Giuliani says the chaos signifies that the nation is focusing on racial disparity when it should be setting its attention on the way the police force is arranged in respect to high crime rates.

„Why don’t you cut it down so that so many white police officers don’t have to be in black areas?“

„White police officers wouldn’t be there if you (speaking to Dyson) weren’t killing each other 75% of the time.“

The former New York mayor, who has been credited with greatly reducing crime in the Big Apple among poorer areas, insisted that the focus of the nation should pivot towards reducing crime among the black community.

„(Crime) is hardly insignificant,“ Giuliani said. „It is the reason for the heavy police presence in the black community.“

St. Louis Prosecutor: Key Witnesses Flip-Flopped

St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert McCulloch said that the most “credible” and “reliable” eyewitnesses all came to support Officer Darren Wilson’s claim that he shot Michael Brown in self-defense.

During St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney Robert P. McCulloch’s press conference Monday night, during which he explained why a Missouri grand jury decided not to indict police Officer Darren Wilson for fatally shooting Michael Brown, McCulloch made shocking revelations about the testimony of some of the key witnesses.

“The most credible eyewitnesses to the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., said he had charged toward police Officer Darren Wilson just before the final, fatal shots, the St. Louis County prosecutor said Monday night,” the New York Times explained.

That kind of testimony flies in the face of the accounts given by several eyewitnesses who spoke to news organizations immediately after Brown’s shooting in August: that Brown had his hands up in the air, seemingly surrendering, as Wilson continued shooting. Apparently some of those witnesses changed their stories about what happened, or their version of events didn’t match up with the physical evidence.

“The accounts of several other witnesses from the Ferguson neighborhood where Mr. Brown, 18 and unarmed, met his death on Aug. 9—including those who said Mr. Brown was trying to surrender—changed over time or were inconsistent with physical evidence, the prosecutor, Robert P. McCulloch, said,” the Times continued.

More than half of the 12 individuals who made up the grand jury supported Wilson’s claims that he fatally shot Brown in self-defense.

“The fact that at least nine members of the 12-member panel could not agree to indict the officer indicates that they accepted the narrative of self-defense put forth by Officer Wilson in his voluntary, four hours of testimony before the grand jury,” the Times reports.

McCulloch said that the “most reliable” eyewitness accounts also supported Wilson’s version of events.

St. Louis County prosecutor announced the decision of a grand jury not to indict Darren Wilson, the white police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, in Ferguson, Mo.

The most credible eyewitnesses to the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Mo., said he had charged toward Police Officer Darren Wilson just before the final, fatal shots, the St. Louis County prosecutor said Monday night as he sought to explain why a grand jury had not found probable cause to indict the officer.

The accounts of several other witnesses from the Ferguson neighborhood where Mr. Brown, 18 and unarmed, met his death on Aug. 9 — including those who said Mr. Brown was trying to surrender — changed over time or were inconsistent with physical evidence, the prosecutor, Robert P. McCulloch, said in a news conference.

“The duty of the grand jury is to separate fact and fiction,” he said in a statement watched by a tense nation. “No probable cause exists to file any charges against Darren Wilson.”

Mr. McCulloch praised the grand jurors, who met on 25 days over a three-month period and heard 60 witnesses, for pouring “their hearts and souls into this process” and said that only by hearing all the evidence, as they had, could one fairly judge the case.

The task facing the St. Louis County grand jury was not to determine whether Officer Darren Wilson was guilty of a crime, but whether there was evidence to justify bringing charges, which could have ranged from negligent manslaughter to intentional murder.

Mr. McCulloch, in his summary of the months of testimony, said it was supported by the most reliable eyewitness accounts — from African-Americans in the vicinity of the shooting — as well as physical evidence and the consistent results of three autopsies.

At issue, under the Missouri law governing use of deadly force by law enforcement as well as general rules for self-defense, was if Officer Wilson “reasonably believed” that he or others were in serious danger.

According to transcripts released Monday night, Officer Wilson testified that after he encountered Mr. Brown and a friend walking in the street, he realized the pair might be those being sought for stealing cigarillos from a convenience store minutes earlier.

According to witnesses and blood and other evidence found inside the car, Officer Wilson first fired two shots while he struggled with Mr. Brown through the window of his patrol vehicle, a Chevrolet Tahoe, grazing Mr. Brown’s hand.

Mr. Brown started to run away, with Officer Wilson in chase, then stopped and turned. According to the prosecutor’s summary, the officer fired five shots as Mr. Brown charged him, then another five shots as he made what one witness called a “full charge.”

Only 90 seconds passed between Officer Wilson’s first encounter with the youths and the arrival of a backup police car, just after the shooting stopped, the prosecutor said.

Probable cause is not a stiff standard. It does not require that most of the evidence be incriminating, let alone be proof “beyond a reasonable doubt,” as required in a criminal trial. Instead, grand juries are ordinarily instructed to issue an indictment when there is “some evidence” of guilt, legal experts said.

To Mr. Brown’s parents and their supporters, the case for bringing at least some charge in this case seemed open and shut. But the jurors also had to consider whether Officer Wilson acted within the limits of the lethal-force law, raising the threshold for an indictment.

Independent legal experts said it was impossible to analyze the grand jury decision without studying the transcripts of the testimony as well as the police reports, autopsies and forensic evidence that might shed light on what Mr. Brown was doing in his final seconds: whether he was menacing the officer or, as a friend who was with him said, trying to surrender.

Some people claiming to be eyewitnesses said Mr. Brown was shot in the back, Mr. McCulloch said, but later changed their stories when autopsies found no injuries entering his back. But others, African-Americans who did not speak out publicly, he said, consistently said that the youth had menaced the officer.

Mr. McCulloch, had promised that he would allay any suspicions about the fairness of the proceedings by releasing, with names redacted, transcripts of testimony and other evidence heard by the panel.

The release of grand jury information, secret by law, is rare, and Mr. McCulloch originally said he would first seek a judge’s permission. But on Monday, his office said it had determined that it had a right to release most of the transcripts and it did so Monday night.

The grand jury, which included three African-Americans, deliberated for two days. By law, the final vote on whether to bring an indictment is secret and the jurors are legally prohibited from discussing their deliberations.

The United States Department of Justice is conducting a separate investigation of whether Officer Wilson, who is white, intentionally acted to deprive Mr. Brown, an African-American, of his civil rights. But the bar for such cases is a high one, and officials have privately said they are unlikely to bring federal charges. The Justice Department is also conducting a broader investigation into the practices of the Ferguson Police Department.

Ein Interview mit Rolf Verleger im Deutschlandfunk vom 22.07.2014

Prolog: Seine abgedroschenen antizionistischen falschen Behauptungen, auf die ich hier gar nicht eingehen will, so stümperhaft blöd und nachweislich falsch sie sind, und seine antisemitischen Gerüchte singt er im Chor der einseitigen Verurteiler Israels und mit seiner pauschalisierenden, polemischen Kritik gegen Israel spielt er den Juden- und Israelfeinden direkt in die Hände. Wer Juden und Israel delegitimiert, diffamiert und dämonisiert, mit doppelten Maßstäben Juden, Israel versus Hamas, Palästinenser, Araber, Muslime mißt, der ist ein Antisemit. Antisemitismus ist das Gerücht über Juden und Israel. Antisemitismus ist keine Meinung, sondern ein Verbrechen.

Ein Judenhasser, ein Antisemit ist, wer an Juden, an Israel kritisiert, was er an anderen Menschen nicht kritisiert, wenn er Juden, Israel übel nimmt, was er anderen nicht übel nimmt.

Von den Staatsmedien, wie Deutschlandfunk, wird er gerne als Monstranz der deutschen Gutmenschen, der neuen wahren Christen, herumgetragen, „sieht her, sogar der sagt es auch, kreuzigt Israel!“, als Credo der deutschen „Antifaschisten“, der „Kämpfer für den Frieden“, der  Pseudo-Humanisten, der „Hamas-Versteher“ und zugleich der Israel-Nichtversteher, die schreien: „ceterum censeo Israel esse delendam“, dessen jüdische Gallionsfiguren solche Namen tragen, wie Rolf Verleger, Abraham Melzer,  Moshe Zuckermann, „Die Tochter“ Evelyn Hecht-Galinski und viele andere Ischariots dieser Erde, die falschen „Israelfreunde“, die aus lauter „Liebe“ zu Israel, Israel am Kreuz hängen sehen wollen, dann sehr heilig und sehr tot.

Ein paar Anmerkungen zur Lage

„Was sich seit nunmehr 18 Tagen in Israel und dem Gazastreifen abspielt, ist wie geschaffen dafür, die Motive der vorgeblichen Palästinafreunde und Israelkritiker vorzuführen. Die Tatsachen sind eindeutig: Eine islamistische Terrororganisation, die seit sieben Jahren die Herrschaft über 1,8 Millionen Menschen im Gazastreifen ausübt (de facto reicht ihr Einfluss deutlich länger zurück), läutet nach 2008/2009 und 2012 die dritte Runde im ewigen Jihad gegen den jüdischen Staat ein. Nachdem sie in dieser Zeit mit mehr als 12.000 Raketen den Menschen in Südisrael das Leben zur Hölle gemacht hat, verfügt sie zu Beginn der dritten Runde über ein Arsenal von ca. 10.000, vor allem über Tunnel aus Ägypten eingeschmuggelte Raketen mit deutlich größerer Reichweite.“ (…)

„Und so läuft es, wie es immer läuft, ob nun die Islamisten der Hisbollah oder die der Hamas und des Islamischen Jihad Israel attackieren: Alle, die mit dem jüdischen Staat im besonderen und den Juden im allgemeinen ein Problem haben, schauen genau hin, wie sich Israel zur Wehr setzt. Die vorwiegend muslimischen Demonstranten in Europa machen sich nicht einmal mehr die Mühe, zwischen „Zionisten“ und Juden zu unterscheiden und rotzen ihren widerlichen Hass ungefiltert in die Öffentlichkeit, Hitler-Verehrung inbegriffen; die Politik eiert zwischen lauwarmen Bekenntnissen zum Selbstverteidigungsrecht Israels und Aufrufen zur “Mäßigung” hin und her; die Vereinten Nationen machen sich zum Komplizen der islamistischen Gotteskrieger, indem sie ihre Einrichtungen, wie etwa Schulen, als Raketendepots missbrauchen lassen, und nehmen über den seinem Namen Hohn sprechenden „Menschenrechtsrat“ Israel ins Visier, indem sie die Reaktion der Israelis verurteilen und die Hamas und ihre Angriffe komplett unerwähnt lassen, während sich nur die USA dieser Farce widersetzen und neun europäische Staaten sich feige enthalten; und die Medien spielen das zynische Spiel der Hamas mit, indem sie sich auf tragische Opfergeschichten von Zivilisten konzentrieren, die Kämpfe mit den schwer bewaffneten, 15.000-20.000 Mann starken Einheiten der Hamas ausblenden und ansonsten über eine Handvoll Israelis berichten, die es als einzige von acht Millionen Einwohnern auch nach 20 Jahren immer noch nicht geschnallt haben, dass mit Fatah und Hamas kein Frieden zu machen ist. Und sie heben eine weitere Handvoll Verweigerer als aufrechte Israelis heraus, die im Gegensatz zu allen anderen, denen es auch keinen Spaß macht, Kopf und Kragen zu riskieren, der Meinung sind, es gebe doch sicher eine politische Lösung des Problems. Einfach nur nett sein! Da findet ein Gideon Levy von der gern zitierten linken Ha´aretz ebenso ein warmes Plätzchen wie der Schriftsteller Edgar Keret und eine schöne Seele wie Chen Tamir: „Mit meinen Ansichten gelte ich als radikal”, sagt sie Raniah Salloum von Spiegel online. „Aber ich komme mir nicht so vor. Ich habe das Gefühl, dass ich normal bin und alle anderen verrückt.”

Während diesen Irren eine Bühne bereitet wird, rücken die Israelis in der Bedrohung zusammen. Sie machen sich längst keine Illusionen mehr, weder über die Region, in der sie um ihr Überleben kämpfen, noch über die Weltgemeinschaft, die keinen Finger krumm macht, wenn die Judenmörder von heute ihre Messer wetzen. In dieser hochgradig perversen Welt, in der 1700 Tote des syrischen Bürgerkriegs binnen einer Woche ignoriert werden, während man wegen einiger Hundert in Gaza Amok läuft, das wissen sie, werden sie auf absehbare Zeit und wahrscheinlich auch darüber hinaus auf sich allein gestellt sein. Und dabei trotzdem geduldig und entschlossen bleiben und, anders als ihre Feinde, ihre Menschlichkeit nicht über Bord werfen. Und genau das ist es, was sie so stark macht, angesichts der beschämenden Reaktion der Welt mitten in einem weiteren erfolglosen Versuch, dieses Volk von der Landkarte zu tilgen. Wenigstens das sollte man anerkennen: dass die Israelis ihre Coolness und ihre Moral selbst in diesen Zeiten bewahren.“

Nicht dummstellen: Alle Beschwichtigungsrhetorik kann nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen: Der aktuelle Antisemitismus hat eine neue Qualität erreicht. Seine Wurzeln liegen in der Türkei und arabisch-islamischen Herkunftsländern.

„Keine neue Qualität? Was muss eigentlich noch passieren, damit die Beschwichtiger aufwachen? Da können antisemitische Parolen durchs Land gerufen werden, da kann unter Ausnutzung des Demonstrationsrechts mitten in Deutschland der blanke Judenhass ins Kraut schießen, und die Beschwichtiger rufen: Das hat doch alles keine neue Qualität. „Seltsame Leute“ hätten „blödsinnige Parolen“ gerufen, wiegelt beispielsweise der Historiker Wolfgang Benz ab. Da soll Volksverhetzung als Blödsinn durchgehen, da sollen türkisch- und arabischstämmige Antisemiten als komische Vögel verharmlost werden.

Dieses Dummstellen, diese Verweigerung von Analyse, sobald ein fahles Licht auf Mitbürger mit Migrationshintergrund fallen könnte, hat ideologische Methode. Man relativiert und kontextualisiert die Täterschaften so lange, bis sie unsichtbar geworden sind, damit nur ja kein fremdenfeindlicher Zungenschlag aufkommt. Natürlich sind es immer auch andere. Natürlich gibt es eine unheilige Allianz, die den Judenhass propagiert. Sie reicht von den Neonazis bis zur sogenannten Querfront Jürgen Elsässers. Auch trifft es zu, dass es immer wieder antisemitische Wellen in Deutschland gab, wenn sich im Nahen Osten die Konflikte verschärften.

Migrantische Wurzeln

Aber alle Historisierungsversuche können nicht davon ablenken, dass die Schamlosigkeit der augenblicklichen Judenhetze eine neue Qualität erreicht hat. Nein, dieser Antisemitismus lässt sich gerade nicht als der „konstante Bodensatz in der Gesellschaft“ (Wolfgang Benz) beschreiben. Dieser Antisemitismus entspringt nach allem, was man wahrnimmt, maßgeblich den Köpfen von Migranten aus der Türkei und arabisch-islamischen Herkunftsländern; dieser Antisemitismus lässt sich nicht in der unheiligen Allianz der Judenhasser verstecken, und man macht ihn nicht dadurch besser, dass man erklärt, er sei fremdgesteuert von Dunkelmännern aus fernen Ländern. Richtig ist, dass in vielen dieser judenfeindlichen Obszönitäten ein tradierter Antisemitismus aus der Heimat nachwirkt, der nicht ohne seine religiösen Hintergründe erklärt werden kann.

Man ist weder Rassist noch islamophob, wenn man auch diese religiösen Wurzeln der neuen Judenhetze in den Blick nimmt statt die antisemitischen Pöbeleien bewusst unscharf als Ausfluss mangelnder Integration abzutun. Antisemitismus ist nicht integrierbar. Hier hat jede Beschwichtigungsrhetorik zu verstummen.“

Die Hamas in den sozialen Netzwerken: Schreibt immer „unschuldiger Zivilist“!

„Wie in einer Power-Point-Präsentation erscheint in einem Video ein Stichpunkt nach dem anderen in weißer arabischer Schrift: Die Hamas ruft dazu auf, alle in Gaza Getöteten zunächst als palästinensische Bürger, und dann erst mit ihrem militärischen Rang zu bezeichnen. „Und vergesst nicht, immer ,unschuldiger Zivilist‘dazuschreiben“, heißt es weiter. Beginnen solle man Beiträge mit einem Verweis auf vorhergehende israelische Angriffe. Gen Israel gefeuerte Raketen sollten immer als „vor Ort gefertigt“ identifiziert, jedoch nicht auf Fotografien abgebildet werden. Hamas-Angriffe seien stets als „eine natürliche Reaktion auf die gezielten Attacken der israelischen Armee auf Zivilisten in Gaza und dem Westjordanland“ zu bezeichnen.“

„Für viele Palästinenser, Araber und andere Bewohner der autoritären islamistischen Regime aber ist sie (die Todesliebe) ihre Lebensrealität. Ayaan Hirsi Ali hat in ihren Erinnerungen detailliert beschrieben, wie man ihr in einer kenianischen Schule beibrachte, Juden an ihren Hörnern zu erkennen. Sie hatte natürlich nie einen gesehen. Niemand, den sie kannte, hatte je einen Juden gesehen. Das war auch ganz egal, es war sogar umso besser. Darum ist ja Juden die Reise etwa nach Saudi-Arabien bis heute gänzlich verboten.“ (…) „Muslime weltweit, aber auch die Untertanen anderer Drucksysteme werden permanent mit der Obsession ihrer Machthaber bezüglich des Juden terrorisiert. Eine Welt ohne Israel ist dann die ganz große Erlösungshoffnung. Bis dahin heißt es leiden, und zwar möglichst tapfer. Und dieser religiös verkleidete Wahnsinn treibt nun auch die wütenden jungen Männer und Frauen Europas, in den Banlieues oder im Umfeld der salafistischen Gemeinden in Deutschland, um. Es funktioniert immer wieder – und je unübersichtlicher die Zeiten werden, desto perfekter. Antisemitismus ist einfach irre nützlich. Man sollte nie vergessen, dass es sich hierbei auch um ein politisches Instrument handelt. Niemand hat dessen Wirkung besser beschrieben als Jean-Paul Sartre in seinen 1946 erschienenen „Überlegungen zur Judenfrage“. So nützlich sei diese Geisteshaltung in mehrfacher Hinsicht, dass, so schreibt er, der Antisemit den Juden erfinden müsste, wenn es ihn nicht schon gäbe. Der Antisemitismus reduziert die Komplexität aller Frustrationen auf eine Ursache und deren Bekämpfung und verlangt nicht nach einer politischen oder sozialen Anstrengung. Es geht nur durch Mord. Zugleich vermittelt sich dem Antisemiten das Bewusstsein, einer Elite anzugehören – ohne sich dafür besonders anstrengen zu müssen. Sartre beschreibt den Antisemiten als einen, der Angst hat: vor seinem Gewissen, seiner Freiheit, seinen Instinkten, der Verantwortung, der Einsamkeit, der Veränderung, der Gesellschaft und der Welt. Sein Hass richtet sich folglich gegen unsere Grundwerte. Antisemitismus entspricht einer fundamentalen Verzagtheit an der Moderne, die sich Herrscher potentiell instabiler Länder gut zu eigen machen können. Das geht fast überall. Wie wäre, gäbe es Israel nicht, die Bilanz der Hamas in Gaza? Was haben die gewählten Politiker getan, um die Zukunft ihrer Kinder zu sichern und das Leben der Menschen zu verbessern? Wie lebt es sich für die Mehrheit der Leute in Iran, wie in Saudi-Arabien? Was hat der politische Islam in diesen von der Natur und den Talenten der Jugend ihrer Bevölkerung so reich beschenkten Länder eigentlich erreicht in all den Jahren? Den Mächtigen dort bleibt nicht viel, außer den Verstand ihrer Bürgerinnen und Bürger durch den Appell an heftige Emotionen wie Rachebedürfnis, Neid und Hass zu vernebeln. All das erzeugt man mit dem Antisemitismus. (…)

rbb korrigiert sich stillschweigend- und manipuliert gegen Israel weiter

„In der gestrigen Spätausgabe korrigiert der rbb sich im Bericht über die Al Quds- Demo in Berlin stillschweigend. Es ist nicht mehr von einer Melange von Islamisten und Rechten die Rede, die diesen Aufmarsch bestritten hätten, sondern es wird ausgiebig gezeigt, dass sich einige wenige orthodoxe Juden beteiligt haben.
Die Kamera ist fast während des gesamten Berichts auf die paar Figuren gerichtet, die meinen, ihre Nicht- Anerkennung Israels so weit treiben zu müssen, dass sie mit Judenhassern gemeinsame Sache machen.
Unterschwellige Botschaft: wenn selbst orthodoxe Juden bei der Demo mitmachen, kann die nicht so schlimm sein. Dazu passt die „positive Stellungnahme“ der Polizei, die von lediglich drei Festnahmen wegen versuchter Körperverletzung berichtet, was angesichts der Größe der Demo nicht viel wäre. Auffällig ist, dass die meisten Plakate, die ins Bild kommen, arabisch oder türkisch beschriftet sind.
Am Schluss des Beitrags wird ein Rabbiner aus Potsdam interviewt, der sich sehr zurückhaltend äußert.
Das Schlusswort haben vier Palästinenser, die jeder auf seine Weise die Botschaft der Hamas, dass Israel Kinder morde, verbreiten dürfen.
Fazit: Antisemitismus, nur dezenter verpackt.“

Soll Israel ohne Gegenwehr Tausende Raketen auf seine Städte und Dörfer niederregnen lassen, abgefeuert aus einem Territorium namens Gaza, von einer dort regierenden Terrororganisation namens Hamas – ja?

„Jeden Tag füttern die Medien ihre entsetzten Konsumenten mit Berichten und Bildern, die das Unrecht der israelischen Militärmaschinerie illustrieren sollen: verzweifelte Frauen, Kinder, Alte, die nicht wissen, wohin fliehen in dem rundum abgeriegelten Gaza. Ein fürchterlicher Anblick. Kann eine Armee mehr im Unrecht sein als die israelische?

Was von den Medien nicht mitgeliefert wird, sind die Bilder der wirklichen Täter: die Führer der Hamas, die ihre Raketenstellungen und ihre Kommandobunker, überhaupt ihre gesamte militärische Infrastruktur mit perverser Absicht mitten in den eng besiedelten Wohnquartieren errichtet haben. Raketenstellungen in Schulen, Schützennester in Krankenhäusern, Werferbatterien auf Märkten. Wenn die israelische Armee die gefährdeten Menschen aufruft, ein Kampfgebiet zu verlassen, rufen die Hamas-Kommandanten sie zum Bleiben auf.

Das Terrorregime in Gaza hält die eigene Bevölkerung als Geisel, missbraucht sie als Schutzschild: Frauen und Kinder werden dem israelischen Feuer ausgesetzt. Anschliessend werden die Opfer den Kameras der internationalen Medien vorgeführt: «Seht her, was die Israelis anrichten!»

Die westlichen Medien sind voll von solchen Bildern, effektvoll arrangiert: ein Opfer im Arm des Retters, daneben die verzweifelte Mutter sowie ein Hamas-Kämpfer in Heldenpose. Hollywood kann es nicht besser.

Die wahren Mörder dieser Frauen und Kinder sind die Hetzer und Herrscher der Hamas.

Ja, die Hamas ist eine Verbrecherbande!

Eine Schande, dass diese Kriminellen in Europa immer noch Verbündete finden, nicht zuletzt in einem linken Milieu, das den muslimischen Migranten nach dem Munde redet und deren Manifestationen unterstützt: Ein aberwitziger Propagandafeldzug für einen Gottesstaat, der seine Bürger brutal unterjocht, die Frauen rechtlos hält, jede kritische Regung mit Folter und Mord erstickt.

Diesem religiösen Totalitarismus, ausgerüstet mit moderner iranischer Raketentechnik, ist Israel ausgesetzt – ein Staat unserer Zeit, konfrontiert mit Mentalität und Ideologie des Mittelalters. “

NICOLAUS FEST schreibt: Islam als Integrationshindernis

Ich bin ein religionsfreundlicher Atheist. Ich glaube an keinen Gott, aber Christentum, Judentum oder Buddhismus stören mich auch nicht.

Nur der Islam stört mich immer mehr. Mich stört die weit überproportionale Kriminalität von Jugendlichen mit muslimischem Hintergrund. Mich stört die totschlagbereite Verachtung des Islam für Frauen und Homosexuelle.

Mich stören Zwangsheiraten, „Friedensrichter“, „Ehrenmorde“.

Und antisemitische Pogrome stören mich mehr, als halbwegs zivilisierte Worte hergeben.

Nun frage ich mich: Ist Religion ein Integrationshindernis? Mein Eindruck: nicht immer. Aber beim Islam wohl ja. Das sollte man bei Asyl und Zuwanderung ausdrücklich berücksichtigen!

Ich brauche keinen importierten Rassismus, und wofür der Islam sonst noch steht, brauche ich auch nicht.

Der Islam ist keine Religion, sondern eine kollektivistische Sex- und Gewaltsekte, die im Allgemeinen geborenen Versagern ein Überlegenheitsgefühl verschaffen, im Besonderen jedoch die sexuelle und existenzielle Selbstbestimmung der Frau unterbinden soll. Er ist völlig diesseitig orientiert und entbehrt jeglicher Spiritualität. Sein Begründer Mohammed war keineswegs ein Prophet, so wir es im christlichen oder theologischen Sinne verstehen, sondern ein Kriegsherr, Massenmörder, cleverer Geschäftsmann und ein Lustmolch, der unter anderem ein sechsjähriges Mädchen geheiratet und es mit 9 Jahren gefickt hat. Sämtliche Riten und Ge- und Verbote dienen im Islam dem Zwecke, das Individuum bis in seine intimsten Bereiche zu kontrollieren, es zu entmündigen, seine Fortpflanzungsstrategien mittels der Verhinderung der weiblichen Selektion bei der Partnerwahl zugunsten der genetischen Deformation zu manipulieren und es in ein emotional sowie gesellschaftliches Überwachungssystem hineinzuzwängen.

In den letzten tausend Jahren kam aus keinem islamisch geprägten Land je eine Erfindung oder Entdeckung, welche unser Leben bereicherte, Wohlstand schuf, die Gesundheit verbesserte, das Alter verlängerte und diese unsere westliche Kultur nennenswert beeinflußte.

Kurz, der Islam und die ihm huldigenden, ihn demonstrativ in die Öffentlichkeit tragenden und für ihn Sonderrechte einfordernden Menschen sind Scheiße und gehören eigentlich aus unserer freiheitlichen Welt entfernt. Wenn dies nicht geschieht, werden wir durch die demographische Überlegenheit der Söhne und Töchter Islams schon in wenigen Jahren in der Hölle der Armseligkeit, bestialischer Gewalt, insbesondere sexueller gegenüber Frauen, und der atemberaubenden Rückschrittlichkeit wie in der Mehrheit der islamischen Länder wiederfinden. Wir werden zu ihren Sklaven werden.

Hamed Abdel-Samad schreibt:

„Der Islam ist frauen- und homosexuellenfreundlich, friedlich und fördert die Integration.“ Manche Leute, die diese Behauptung schwachsinnig finden würden, finden folgende Aussage trotzdem rassistisch: Der Islam ist frauen- und homosexuellenfeindlich, gewalttätig und integrationshemmend!
Hier handelt es sich um eine Meinung, die sowohl in den Texten des Islam als auch in der Praxis eine Begründung findet. Es muss nicht eine richtige Meinung sein, aber sie ist eine Meinung!
Dass Muslime sich über solche Behauptungen empören, ist verständlich. Aber dass eine Zeit-Redakteurin diese muslimische Empörung als ein Beleg für gelungene Integration sieht, ist merkwürdig! Denn wenn Muslime sich über Terror oder Ehrenmord im Namen ihres Glaubens empören würden, könnte ich diese Empörung als Beleg für gelungene Integration interpretieren. Aber Wut wegen Image-Fragen ist eigentlich ein Luxus!
Rassismus ist wenn deutsche Staatsbürger z.B. rufen würden: Muslim, Muslim, feiges Schwein! Oder wenn Sie „Heil Hitler!“ rufen würden wenn Muslime vorbeigehen!
Es ist rassistisch, wenn man die Häuser und Geschäfte der Muslime mit dem Buchstaben „M“ übermalen würde, oder wenn Muslime gekreuzigt oder enthauptet werden nur weil sie Muslime sind. Falls das, Gott behüte, in Deutschland passieren oder falls jemand dazu aufrufen würde, wären wir alle zurecht empört, und Muslime würden von allen Menschen weltweit verlangen, sich zu empören. Geschieht dies aber mit den Christen im Irak begründet mit eindeutigen Koranpassagen und Aussagen des Propheten, dann bleibt die muslimische Empörung verstummt.
Ich halte es für eine muslimische Krankheit, dass Empatie und Mitgefühl nur muslimischen Opfern weltweit vorbehalten sind. Aber nicht einmal allen muslimischen Opfern. Opfer, die im Krieg gegen Amerika oder Israel fallen, lieben wir mehr als muslimische Opfer, die von Muslimen selbst getötet werden!
Heuchelei nenne ich das! Eine weitere muslimische Krankheit! Diese und andere Krankheiten entfernen Muslime mehr und mehr von der Weltgemeinschaft und isolieren sie im Sumpf des Selbstmitleids!

Amos Oz erklärt, weshalb er die Bodenoffensive im Gaza-Streifen unterstützt:

Oz: Frage 1: Was würden Sie tun, wenn sich Ihr Nachbar auf dem Balkon gegenüber seinen kleinen Jungen auf den Schoß setzte und dann begänne, mit einem Maschinengewehr in Ihr Kinderzimmer zu feuern?

Frage 2: Was würden Sie tun, wenn Ihr Nachbar gegenüber einen Tunnel von seinem Kinderzimmer in Ihr Kinderzimmer grübe, um Ihr Haus in die Luft zu jagen oder Ihre Familie zu entführen?

Oz: Mit diesen beiden Fragen übergebe ich das Interview an Sie. (…)

Oz: Die gegenwärtigen Feindseligkeiten werden leider erst dann enden, wenn eine der Parteien erschöpft ist – oder beide. Heute Morgen habe ich sehr aufmerksam die Charta der Hamas gelesen. Darin heißt es, dass der Prophet jedem Muslim befiehlt, überall auf der Welt jeden Juden zu töten. Die Charta zitiert die „Protokolle der Weisen von Zion“ (eine antisemitische Hetzschrift; Anmerkung der Redaktion) und erklärt, dass die Juden durch den Völkerbund und die Vereinten Nationen die Welt kontrollierten, dass die Juden zwei Weltkriege verursacht hätten und dass die ganze Welt von jüdischem Geld kontrolliert werde. Ich sehe also kaum eine Chance für einen Kompromiss zwischen Israel und der Hamas. Ich war mein ganzes Leben ein Mann des Ausgleichs, aber auch ein Mann des Ausgleichs kann nicht auf die Hamas zugehen und sagen: „Vielleicht treffen wir uns in der Mitte und Israel existiert dann eben nur montags, mittwochs und freitags.“ (…)

Oz: Die einzige Alternative zu einer Fortsetzung der israelischen Militäroperation wäre es, Jesus Christus zu folgen und dem Feind die andere Wange hinzuhalten. Ich habe Jesus Christus in dieser Frage nie zugestimmt. Anders als europäische Pazifisten habe ich nie geglaubt, dass das leibhaftige Böse der Krieg ist. Aus meiner Sicht ist das leibhaftige Böse Aggression und der einzige Weg, Aggression abzuwehren, ist leider Gewalt. Das ist, worin der Unterschied zwischen einem europäischen Pazifisten und einem israelischen Peacenik wie mir besteht. Wenn ich eine kleine Anekdote hinzufügen darf: Eine Verwandte von mir, die den Holocaust im KZ Theresienstadt überlebte, erinnerte ihre Kinder und Enkel immer daran, dass ihr Leben 1945 nicht von Friedensdemonstranten mit Plakaten und Blumen gerettet wurde, sondern von Soldaten mit Maschinenpistolen. Oz: Wie sicher können sich Juden auf diesem Planeten fühlen? Ich denke nicht an die vergangenen 20 oder 50 Jahre, sondern an die vergangenen 2000 Jahre. Aber ich werde Ihnen sagen, was meine Hoffnung und mein Gebet für die Zukunft von Israel ist. Ich würde Israel gerne für alle Zeiten von den Titelseiten der Zeitungen weltweit verschwinden sehen und möchte stattdessen sehen, wie es Siedlungen in den Literatur-, Kunst-, Musik- und Architektur-Beilagen erobert, besetzt und baut. Das ist mein Traum für die Zukunft.

Amos Oz, 75, gehört zu den bekanntesten israelischen Schriftstellern. Seine Romane, Erzählungen, Essays und Kinderbücher wurden in mehr als 40 Sprachen übersetzt. Für seine Werke erhielt er in den vergangenen Jahren zahlreiche Auszeichnungen, am 14. November wird er mit dem Siegfried-Lenz-Preis geehrt.

Deniz Yücel: Nein, du darfst nicht

Es gibt kein Menschenrecht auf Israelkritik. Schon gar nicht für Deutsche. Dass du nicht darfst, heißt übrigens nicht, dass du in der Sache recht hättest.

Ein Gutes hatten die antisemitischen Parolen auf den Demonstrationen: Seither gibt es etwas, was man hierzulande nur noch aus Studien kannte: leibhaftige Antisemiten. Die heißen Mohammed und Laila und Kemal und rufen Dinge, die sich nicht gehören.

Ein weiterer Effekt dieser Demonstrationen: Sie setzen Maßstäbe dafür, was Antisemitismus ist. Und, klar, gemessen an „Hamas, Hamas, Juden ins Gas“, ist alles andere gemäßigt – Gedichte von ehemaligen Waffen-SS-Männern, Karikaturen in extremliberalen Zeitungen, die täglich dutzendfach gedruckte Forderung, gegenüber Israel mal Kante zu zeigen.

Denn darin sind sich fast alle Kommentatoren und ihre Leser einig: Natürlich dürfe man Israel kritisieren – ganz so, als ob man Leben und Eigentum riskieren würde, wenn man das macht. Dieselbe verlogene Figur, die auch aus anderen Zusammenhängen sattsam bekannt ist: Man wird ja wohl noch sagen dürfen.

Du kommst hier nicht raus

Ja, du darfst es und du tust es. Aber es ist moralisch nicht richtig. Denn, nein, du darfst nicht. Es gibt kein Menschenrecht auf Israelkritik. Und schon gar nicht für dich. Nicht als Nachkomme jener Leute, die die Vernichtung der Juden von Europa geplant und durchgeführt haben. Nicht als Nachkomme jener, die sich am Holocaust bereichert haben. Nicht als Mitarbeiter von Bayer, Degussa oder Volkswagen. Nicht als Angehöriger eines Milieus, das in den neunziger Jahren Technopartys in arisierten Immobilien feierte. Gar nicht. Du bist Deutscher, aus der Nummer kommst du noch in tausend Jahren nicht raus.

Dieser moralische Imperativ gilt auch, wenn dein Opa nicht in der Wehrmacht dazu beitrug, dass hinter der Front die Gaskammern laufen konnten. Es gibt nämlich kein Deutschland ohne Auschwitz – kein Multikultideutschland, kein linkes Deutschland, kein besseres Deutschland, gar keins.

Wenn dir die Menschenrechte im Nahen Osten so am Herzen liegen, dann finden sich für dich andere Themen. Die Situation der Palästinenser in Syrien zum Beispiel, die zwischen den Truppen des Assad-Regimes und den liebevoll „Rebellen“ genannten islamistischen Milizen eingeschlossen sind.

Unerheblich ist dabei, dass es in Israel Leute gibt, die die eigene Regierung kritisieren. Dass sie es tun, zeigt, was Israel von allen anderen Staaten der Region unterscheidet. (Auf der anderen Seite muss man lange nach Leuten suchen, die aus Empathie mit der israelischen Bevölkerung die Hamas ebenso wie die PLO kritisieren. Die Disziplin Palästinakritik ist noch nicht erfunden.)

Alles unverhältnismäßig

Aber dass linke Israelis oder jüdische Linke außerhalb Israels das können, heißt noch lange nicht, dass du das auch darfst. Diese Trennung ist scharf und für dich, der du dich als mündiger Bürger fühlst, der sich von niemandem (außer vielleicht von deinem Chef) den Mund verbieten lässt, ungewohnt. Aber diese Schärfe entspricht der Schärfe der Trennung zwischen jenen, die selektiert wurden, und jenen, die selektiert haben.

Dass du besser die Klappe hältst, heißt übrigens noch lange nicht, dass du in der Sache recht hättest. So gelten die Luftschläge gegen Stellungen der Hamas als unverhältnismäßig. Aber wenn Israel stattdessen mit Bodentruppen in den Gazastreifen einmarschieren würde, würde das ebenfalls als unverhältnismäßig gelten. Als unverhältnismäßig gelten die Blockade des Gazastreifens oder Sanktionen gegen die Autonomiebehörde. Wer Israel Unverhältnismäßigkeit vorwirft, verlangt, dass Israel auf die dauernde Aggression durch die Hamas gar nicht reagiert. Erstaunlich in einem Land, das einst wegen ein paar chirurgischer RAF-Operationen fast kirre wurde und in dem ein paar Bengalos in Fußballstadien als Gewaltexzess gelten.

Als gemäßigt gilt, sich von beiden Seiten zu distanzieren – von einer Terrorgruppe bekennender Antisemiten wie der Hamas wie von einem demokratischen Staat, der seine Bürger zu schützen versucht. Aber klar: Gemessen am Holocaust, sind die Raketen der Hamas nichts, was eine Reaktion erfordern würde.

Deniz Yücel:Der Holocaust, Israel und du

Vor lauter nachträglicher Empathie für die ermordeten Juden hast du keine für die lebenden – jedenfalls keine, die ohne ein großes „Aber“ auskäme.

Du lässt dir nicht den Mund verbieten. Mehr noch: Auf den moralischen Imperativ, Israel nicht kritisieren zu dürfen, antwortest du: „Ich muss sogar.“ Es klingt nach Bürde und Pflicht – und ein wenig zwanghaft.

Aber du hast es auch nicht leicht. Du weißt, dass deine Vorfahren nicht ganz koscher waren; logisch, du bist ja nicht blöd. Natürlich hast du dich mit dem Nationalsozialismus auseinandergesetzt. Du hast um Anne Frank getrauert und mit den Schindlerjuden gefiebert. Du hast eine ansehnliche Sammlung Judaica und ausgewählte Klezmer-Alben im Regal.

Du weißt zwar nicht exakt, was Opa an der Ostfront gemacht hat (und nicht, ob er vielleicht auch ein bisschen Widerstand war), aber nachdem Opa unter der Erde und das Erbe eingestrichen war und auch sonst kein Parteigenosse mehr herumspukte, hast du die Geschichte deines Dorfs, deines Instituts, deiner Firma, deiner Behörde und deines Fußballklubs aufgearbeitet. In der Aufarbeitung von Geschichte macht dir niemand etwas vor.

Du hast Jürgen Habermas’ Rat im „Historikerstreit“ befolgt und „nach Auschwitz“ nationales Selbstbewusstsein nicht aus deiner „unbesehenen, sondern kritisch angeeigneten Geschichte“ geschöpft. Dabei hast du dir nicht vom Flakhelfer Martin Walser reinreden lassen, der gegen die „Dauerpräsentation unserer Schande“ gestänkert hatte. Stattdessen hast du mitten in der Hauptstadt ein Mahnmal errichtet – eines, zu dem die Leute dem Wunsch des damaligen Bundeskanzlers Gerhard Schröder entsprechend „gern hingehen“.

Andere Leute haben die Bastille gestürmt oder die Demokratie erfunden, wir haben die Juden umgebracht (und wurden dafür, was auch nicht völlig zu vernachlässigen ist, ausgebombt). Man kann es sich eben nicht aussuchen. Aber du stellst dich wenigstens dieser Vergangenheit.

Nationales Selbstbewusstsein

Und daraus leitest du nicht nur „nationales Selbstbewusstsein“ ab, sondern auch das, was du „besondere Verantwortung“ nennst. „Der Massenmord an den Juden verpflichtete, so meint man, Deutschland dazu, Israel mit Lob und Tadel moralisch beizustehen, damit das Opfer nicht rückfällig werde. Zwei angezettelte Weltkriege böten, so meint man weiter, die besten Startbedingungen, wenn es um den ersten Platz unter den Weltfriedensrichtern und Weltfriedensstiftern geht, frei nach der jesuitischen Devise, dass nur ein großer Sünder das Zeug zum großen Moralisten habe“, schrieb Wolfgang Pohrt vor dreißig Jahren. Er meinte dich.

Denn vor lauter nachträglicher Empathie für die ermordeten Juden hast du keine für die lebenden – jedenfalls keine, die ohne ein großes „Aber“ auskäme. Dafür berufst du dich, wenn es um Israel geht, gern auf ein paar lebende Juden. Du bestehst darauf, dass Israel nicht identisch ist mit den Juden, womöglich sprichst du sogar von „Zionismus“. Sicher lehnst du den Antisemitismus ab. Aber du kapierst nicht, dass „Schindlers Liste“ Geschichte ist und nun der Staat Israel an die Stelle dessen getreten ist, das früher „Weltjudentum“ hieß. Und diesem winzigen Flecken Erde, dem Staat der Überlebenden, hast du am allerwenigsten Ratschläge zu erteilen. Du am wenigsten.

Besser: Du lässt es.

Eine Erklärung zum Vormarsch der Miliz „Islamischer Staat“ (vormals Isis) im Nord-Irak, zu ihren Gräueltaten gegen Christen, Jesiden, Schiiten, Alawiten und säkulare Sunniten, zu den Flüchtlingen im Sindschar-Gebirge hingegen findet sich in diesem Zeitraum nichts. Keine einzige Erklärung des Ministers.

Das heißt jedoch nicht, dass man im Auswärtigen Amt gar keine Meinung hätte. Eine Aufrüstung der kurdischen Truppen wäre falsch, sagte kürzlich eine Sprecherin auf Nachfrage eines Journalisten. „Isis wird geschwächt, wenn man es schafft, dass die Sunniten, die Isis unterstützen, Isis nicht mehr diese Rückendeckung geben.“

Klar. Man kann es sich gut vorstellen, wie bereitwillig sich diese Leute an den Runden Tisch setzen, und auf Wunsch schickt die Bundesregierung bestimmt gerne einen Vermittler, Heiner Geißler müsste doch verfügbar sein. (Schlichtervorschlag: Köpfen von Ungläubigen jetzt nur noch werktags zwischen 9 und 17 Uhr, Kreuzigungen nur freitags.)

Mit dieser Kaltschnäuzigkeit steht die Bundesregierung nicht allein. „Kuddelmuddel im Irak: Kurden, Sunniten, Schiiten, Stalaktiten, alle wollen jetzt ein Stück vom Staatskuchen“, heißt es in der aktuellen Titanic so schön. Oder, wie ein Kommentator der ARD bereits im Januar, aber ganz ernsthaft meinte und was immer noch so ziemlich alle Kommentatoren meinen: „Die tief sitzende und berechtigte Unzufriedenheit der irakischen Sunniten bereitet den Eiferern einen fruchtbaren Boden.“

Immer nur Völker und Stämme

Mag sein. Mag sein, dass bei einer integrativeren Politik des Zentralstaats Isis nicht so leicht so tief in den Irak hätte vordringen können. Aber glaubt man wirklich, die Dschihadisten aus Tschetschenien, Afghanistan oder Dinslaken hätten sich davon abhalten lassen? („Ach, die sunnitischen Araber werden im Irak nicht ausgegrenzt? Dann lassen wir das mit dem Dschihad, war eh nur so eine Idee.“)

Was für ein Blödsinn. Einmal mehr zeigt sich das Elend des politischen Denkens in Deutschland seit Johann Gottfried Herder, Johann Gottlieb Fichte und Peter Scholl-Latour: Immer von Kultur zu reden, wo es um Politik ginge. Über Stämme und Völker und ihre „uralten Konflikte“ zu sinnieren, wo es um eine Erscheinung der Moderne wie den Islamfaschismus ginge. Und partout nicht zu begreifen, was den Unterschied zwischen Kultur und Zivilisation ausmacht.

Doch genau darum, um die Verteidigung der Zivilisation, geht es im Irak. „Wir stehen vor einem Völkermord, der in seinen Ausmaßen nur vergleichbar ist mit den Massakern in Ruanda und Darfur“, schreibt die Gemeinschaft der Jesidischen Vereine in Deutschland. Auch die Kurdische Gemeinde spricht von einem „drohenden Völkermord“. Das klingt dramatisch. Aber nach allem, was bekannt ist, ist es nicht übertrieben.

Gegen diese Höllenbrut, die aus Dantes Inferno entsprungen sein könnte oder aus einem besonders blutigen Mel-Gibson-Film, gegen diese Rackets namens Isis aber stehen die Kurden allein, wie schon so oft in ihrer Geschichte. Sie demonstrieren in Berlin, unter sich, ohne deutsche, arabische oder türkische Unterstützer und fast unbemerkt von den Medien. Und sie kämpfen allein. Die irakisch-kurdischen Peschmerga bekommen nun – trotz aller internen politischen Differenzen – Hilfe von der türkisch-kurdischen PKK, der syrisch-kurdischen PYD und den Selbstverteidigungskräften der Jesiden, einer kurdischen Bevölkerungsgruppe mit eigener Religion.

Schneller zu den Jungfrauen

Im Gegensatz zu den Isis-Milizen verfügen diese Kämpfer über keine schweren Waffen und sind allenfalls für den Guerillakampf ausgebildet. Da auf die irakische Zentralregierung kein Verlass ist, benötigen sie Hilfe von außen: Waffen, Munition, Unterstützung aus der Luft. Denn antworten kann man diese Bande von Lynchmördern nur in der Sprache, die sie verstehen; das einzige Mittel, sie aufzuhalten, besteht darin, ihren Weg zu den ersehnten 72 Jungfrauen abzukürzen. Das klingt martialisch. Aber anders hat man noch keine faschistische Armee von ihrem Tun abhalten können.

Die moralische Pflicht und die politische Notwendigkeit, den Kurden in ihrem Kampf gegen die Dschihadisten zu helfen, haben alle. Hoffnung auf militärische Hilfe aus Deutschland und Europa haben die Kurden indes nicht. Ihre Hoffnung heißt Amerika, wieder einmal. Und die USA stehen tatsächlich besonders in der Pflicht. Denn derzeit prallen zwei Folgen des Irakkrieges aufeinander: Einerseits haben die USA die Dschihadisten, die sie im Irak zu bekämpfen vorgaben, erst ins Land geholt. (Zwischenzeitig verlagerten sich diese nach Syrien, nun kämpfen sie in beiden Ländern.)

Andererseits hat der Irakkrieg die Autonome Region Kurdistan geschaffen, das erste längerlebige staatliche Gebilde der Kurden, das, anders als der restliche Irak, kein failed state ist, und, im Vergleich zu den Nachbarstaaten, weniger repressiv und einigermaßen säkular. Dass die Christen und Jesiden dort Zuflucht suchen und nicht etwa im Zentralstaat, dürfte kein Zufall sein.

Keine internationale Beachtung

Ähnlich ist die Konstellation in Syrien: Einerseits hat die Isis ihren Aufstieg nicht nur Geldgebern aus Saudi-Arabien oder Katar zu verdanken, sondern auch der Unterstützung etwa der Türkei. Andererseits ist die von kurdischen Milizen kontrollierte Region Rojava wohl die einzige, in der es heute um die Menschenrechte besser bestellt ist als vor Beginn des Aufstands gegen das Assad-Regime. Internationale Beachtung finden sie aber nicht. Zu den – gescheiterten – Friedensgesprächen im Februar in Genf waren sie nicht einmal eingeladen. Vielleicht ist der Angriff der Isis der Moment, der einen eigenen kurdischen Staat notwendig erscheinen lässt.

Doch darum geht es zur Stunde nicht. Zur Stunde geht es um eins: Kurden und Jesiden brauchen Hilfe, humanitäre wie militärische. Für das eine hat der Zentralrat der Jesiden in Deutschland ein Spendenkonto errichtet. Das andere müssen Staaten leisten. Auch Deutschland. Geboten wäre es zudem, all jenen Leuten das Handwerk zu legen, die die Isis-Kämpfer mit ständig neuem Kanonenfutter beliefern. Und mit noch etwas kann sich Deutschland nützlich machen: das PKK-Verbot aufheben. Im Nahen Osten gibt es auf absehbare Zeit nicht viele Kräfte, mit denen Demokratie zu machen ist. Die Kurden gehören dazu.

Israels Recht

Für sein Vorgehen gegen die Hamas muss sich Israel nicht ­entschuldigen. Auf die Anklagebank gehören diejenigen, die die eigene Bevölkerung immer wieder ins Elend ziehen.

Gaza könnte heute ein Singapur am Mittelmeer sein. Dass der Landstrich zwischen Israel und Ägypten zu den elendsten Gebieten dieser Erde gehört, haben sich die Palästinenser selbst zuzuschreiben. Sie haben die radikal­islamische Hamas gewählt, welche die 1,8 Millionen Menschen ins Verderben geführt hat. Damit entschieden sie sich für eine Bewegung, die nie ein Geheimnis aus ihren martialischen Absichten gemacht hat. Die Hamas brüstet sich bis heute damit, das Ende der jüdischen Geschichte voranzutreiben. Und sie setzt alles daran, dieses selbstgesetzte und in der Charta unmissverständlich fixierte Ziel zu erreichen – und sei es auf Kosten der eigenen Bevölkerung.

Israels Schlagabtausch mit der Hamas, dem palästinensischen Ableger der Muslimbruderschaft, ist kein isolierter Kampf. Er findet in ­einem regionalen Kontext statt, dem Vor­rücken der Dschihadisten im Irak, in Syrien, im Libanon und in Libyen. Der Machtzuwachs der ­Radikalislamisten ist eine direkte Folge des arabischen Frühlings, der den Einfluss ­vieler Nationen im Mittleren Osten arg reduziert hat. Dieses Vakuum nutzen Islamisten in gescheiterten Staaten wie Libyen, Syrien, dem Irak und in den Palästinensergebieten. Die Dschihadisten beobachten deshalb sehr genau, wie das Ringen zwischen der Hamas und Israel ausgeht.

Der Kampf ist für Europa entscheidend

Der Krieg gegen die Hamas hat auch eine ­globale Dimension. Ob Bengasi, Berlin, Boston, Brighton, Brüssel oder Burgas: Radikal­islamisten schlagen weltweit zu, und sie rekrutieren im Westen junge Menschen, die sich für den Heiligen Krieg begeistern können. Im globalen Krieg gegen den Terror ist Israel an vorderster Front engagiert. Der Kampf gegen die Hamas ist entscheidend für das künftige Leben in Europa oder in den USA. Hamas, Isis, al-Qaida, Boko Haram oder Hisbollah: Sie ­verachten die Demokratie, die Moderne, ­letztlich auch das Leben.

Die Unterschiede zu Israel könnten grösser nicht sein. Israel ist Teil der Gemeinschaft ­demokratischer Staaten. Obwohl die Nation von Anfang an stets und täglich ums Überleben kämpfen musste, umgeben von feindlichen Staaten und Gruppen, die Israel, wenn sie nur könnten, am liebsten ausradieren würden, hat sich das Land in den vergangenen Jahrzehnten zu einer sehr erfolgreichen und innovativen Start-up-Nation entwickelt, in der die grössten Konzerne der Welt mit Forschungs­labors oder Joint Ventures vertreten sind.

Israel war von Anfang an interessiert daran, dass sich auch die Wirtschaft von Gaza erbaulich entwickle. Als sich die israelische Armee und die 8000 Siedler im Jahr 2005 aus dem ­Gazastreifen zurückzogen und nach 38 Jahren die Besetzung beendeten, hatten die Palästinenser erstmals in ihrer jüngeren Geschichte eine Chance. Es flossen Spendengelder aus dem Westen, und nicht zu knapp. Zudem ­erhielten die Palästinenser alle Gewächs­häuser der israelischen Siedler als Geschenk. Das ­Präsent hätte Grundlage sein können für eine blühende Landwirtschaft, für Jobs und Einkommen. Die Grenze zu den israelischen Hafenanlagen war offen, dem Export von Früchten und Blumen standen keine Sperr­anlagen im Weg. Ein gemeinsam mit Israel ­betriebener Industriepark an der Grenze zwischen Gaza und Israel hatte zuvor rund 5000 dringend benötigte Jobs geschaffen.

Hilfsgelder für Kriegsinfrastruktur

Doch kaum waren die Palästinenser für ihr ­eigenes Schicksal verantwortlich, begann das Desaster. Ein grosser Teil der Treibhäuser – die Grundlage künftigen Wohlstandes – wurde vom Mob zerstört. Die Polizeikräfte von Präsident Machmud Abbas waren nicht in der Lage, den Vandalismus zu stoppen. Zudem been­dete ein Terroranschlag auf den Industriepark das Joint Venture und vernichtete so auf einen Schlag alle dortigen Arbeitsplätze.

Noch schlimmer wurde es, nachdem die ­Palästinenser im Jahr 2007 die radikalislamistische Hamas gewählt hatten. Statt in die­ ­Wirtschaft Gazas zu investieren, baute die ­Hamas den Küstenstreifen zu einer militärischen ­Bastion aus. Die ersten Raketen machten den Süden Israels unsicher, während die Hamas im Ausland die hohle Hand machte und Israel für die Not der Bevölkerung verantwortlich machte.

Europa übernahm dieses Narrativ bereitwillig. Es prangerte Jerusalem an, das Elend der Palästinenser durch die Absperrung zu provozieren, spielte den Terror der Hamas herunter – und überwies Hilfsgelder. Die Militanten der Hamas wurden als Freiheitshelden romantisiert. Dass Gaza sein elendes Schicksal even­tuell selber zu verschulden habe, war kein Thema. Wie in kolonialen Zeiten sprach der Westen den Palästinensern die Eigenverantwortung für ihr Schicksal ab. Die Warnung, wonach die Hamas die in bester Absicht überwiesenen Hilfsgelder nicht für humanitäre oder wirtschaftlich sinnvolle Zwecke verwende, sondern in die Kriegsinfrastruktur investiere, wurde in Bern, Brüssel und Berlin als ­böse Propaganda zurückgewiesen.

So konnte die Hamas den Krieg gegen Israel während Jahren systematisch vorbereiten, ­unterstützt von westlichen Steuergeldern. ­Allein, seit sie an der Macht ist, hat sie den Landstrich bereits dreimal in eine Schlacht mit Israel hineingezogen. Das Resultat: jedes Mal verheerend.

Trotzdem hat die Hamas an ihrem Ziel ­festgehalten, Israel zu zerstören. Sie kaufte Tausende von Raketen und grub Dutzende von Terrortunnels. Dabei beging sie das Verbrechen, die Abschussrampen der Raketen und die Tunneleingänge in dichtbesiedelten Gebieten anzulegen, Kommandozentralen in Spitälern unterzubringen, Raketenarsenale in Moscheen zu verstecken und Waffen in Uno-Schulen zu lagern. Die palästinensische Bevölkerung, die Patienten in Spitälern und die Nutzer sozialer Institutionen wurden zynisch als «menschliche Schutzschilde» instrumentalisiert. Die diabolische Absicht ist klar: ­Israels Angriff sollte unter der Zivilbevölkerung zu möglichst hohen Opferzahlen führen, die zu PR-Zwecken verwendet werden können, als Beweis für das brutale Vorgehen der israelischen Armee.

Das Kalkül ist aufgegangen. Israel sieht sich jetzt in der abstrusen Lage, sich dafür entschuldigen zu müssen, gegen den Terror der Hamas vorgegangen zu sein. Die Armee habe internationales Kriegsrecht verletzt, habe gegen humanitäre Prinzipien verstossen und ­ihre Angriffe seien unverhältnismässig gewesen, heisst es.

Diese Vorwürfe sind aus mehreren Gründen haltlos. Sie lassen ausser Acht, dass Israel zwei Gefahren ausschalten musste, nämlich das ­Raketenarsenal der Hamas sowie die Terrortunnels, durch die bereits Soldaten angegriffen und entführt worden sind. Allein in den letzten Wochen hat die Hamas rund 3300 Raketen auf Israel abgefeuert, viele auch auf Tel Aviv. Jede einzelne hatte das Ziel, israelische Zivilisten zu treffen, zu töten. Dass dabei kaum Zivilisten starben, liegt nicht daran, dass die Raketen ungefährlich wären, sondern daran, dass die Geschosse vom effizienten Raketenabwehrsystem «Iron Dome» abgefangen und zerstört wurden. Trotzdem haben sie das Leben in Israel durcheinandergebracht.

Weil in Gaza mehr als 1800 Menschen getötet und an die 10 000 verletzt wurden, ist Israel mit dem Vorwurf konfrontiert, sein Einsatz gegen den Hamas-Terror sei «unverhält­nismässig» gewesen. Doch wer Israel Unverhältnismässigkeit vorwirft, muss erklären können, was Israel hätte unternehmen sollen, um die akute Terrorgefahr der Hamas auszuschalten.

Ziel: israelische Bevölkerung

Auch wenn es Israels Kritiker nicht zur Kenntnis nehmen wollen: Israel ging, so gut es eben in der humanitären Falle, die von der Hamas gelegt worden war, ging, behutsam vor. Mit Flugblättern oder Telefonanrufen wurden Bewohner von Häusern, die bombardiert werden sollten, zum Verlassen aufgefordert. Dass sie das in der Regel nicht getan haben, ist der Hamas zuzuschreiben. Sie trieb die Menschen in den Tod, indem sie ihnen das Verlassen verbot oder es verunmöglichte. Die Fernseh- und ­Radiostationen der Hamas riefen zum Beispiel die Bevölkerung auf, ihr Leben zu opfern und nicht zu fliehen, wenn Israels Luftwaffe mit ­einem Angriff drohte. Stolz berichtete ein ­Hamas-Kommandant in einem Interview, wie er sich nach einer Warnung beeilt habe, Freunde, Nachbarn und die Familie aufzufordern, dem Angriff auf dem Dach des Hauses zu trotzen. Der Hamas-Mann Ismail Radwan pries Palästinenser dafür, ihre Frauen und Kinder und Alten geopfert zu haben.

Damit ist nicht gesagt, dass es keine tragischen Fehler der israelischen Armee gab in der Hitze des Gefechts. Aber Kriegsverbrechen ­setzen voraus, dass eine Absicht bestand, ­Zivilisten ins Visier zu nehmen, nur weil sie ­Zivilisten waren.

Diese Absicht bestand lediglich bei der Hamas: Sie zwang die eigene Bevölkerung, sich als «menschliche Schutzschilde» zu opfern. Zudem setzte sie gezielt Raketen gegen Israels Bevölkerungszentren ein, und durch die ­Tunnels plante sie Massaker in israelischen Dörfern im Grenzgebiet zum Gazastreifen. Auf die Anklagebank gehört deshalb nicht ­Israel, sondern die Hamas.

Und die Hamas?

Offener Brief von Kulturschaffenden «zum Krieg in Gaza».

Der Boden der deutschen Geschichte, so hört und liest man es immer wieder, reiche bis nach Palästina. «Wir Deutschen» hätten aufgrund unserer Geschichte nicht nur eine besondere Verantwortung gegenüber den Juden, sondern auch für die «Opfer der Opfer», also die Palästinenser. Hätten «wir» uns nicht an den Juden vergangen, gäbe es heute keinen Nahostkonflikt, könnten die Palästinenser in aller Ruhe ihre Felder bestellen, ohne von den Israelis schikaniert zu werden.

Diese Überlegung mag richtig oder falsch sein, sie treibt in jedem Falle seltsame Blüten. So hat vor zwei Wochen eine Gruppe von ­«Kulturschaffenden in Deutschland» einen «Offenen Brief zum Krieg in Gaza» veröffentlicht, der sich «an die Mitglieder des Deutschen Bundestages, an die deutschen Mitglieder des Europäischen Parlaments, an die deutsche ­Bundesregierung» richtet. Der Appell wurde inzwischen von 456 «Kulturschaffenden» unterschrieben, Schriftstellern (Ingo Schulze), Sängerinnen (Nina Hagen), Schauspielerinnen (Vera von Lehndorff) und vielen weiteren, die als Beruf Filmemacher, Musiker, Kulturwissenschaftler, Tänzer, Künstler, Übersetzer, Akademiker, Menschenrechtler, Familientherapeut, Sozialpädagoge, Rapper und DJ angeben. Die meisten sind eher in der zweiten und dritten Reihe des Kulturbetriebes aktiv, einer hat sich einen Namen als ehemaliger Informeller Mit­arbeiter der Staatssicherheit der DDR gemacht.

Worum geht es den deutschen Kulturschaffenden in ihrem offenen Brief an die Politik?

«Wir können», schreiben sie, «nicht schweigen», wenn «die israelische Armee zum wiederholten Male in einer Grossoffensive die Bevölkerung Gazas angreift»; da dieser Angriff «im Rahmen einer engen deutsch-israelischen militärischen, politischen und kulturellen ­Zusammenarbeit» erfolgt, wäre es die Pflicht der deutschen Amtsträger, «sich für die elementaren Rechte und den Schutz auch der ­palästinensischen Bevölkerung einzusetzen!».

Die Hamas wird in dem offenen Brief nicht einmal erwähnt. Es gibt sie nicht. Die Israelis greifen «die Bevölkerung» an, einfach so, aus Spass an der Freud. Der Boden der deutschen Geschichte reicht in der Tat bis Palästina. Wie immer ist der Jud an allem schuld.

Armbrüster: Am Telefon hier im Deutschlandfunk ist jetzt Rolf Verleger. Er ist Psychologe, Buchautor und er war bis vor fünf Jahren Mitglied im Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland. Schönen Guten Morgen Herr Verleger.

Verleger: Guten Morgen Herr Armbrüster.

Armbrüster: Herr Verleger, was geht Ihnen da durch den Kopf, wenn Sie von solchen antisemitischen Parolen hören, die da in Berlin auf offener Straße gegrölt werden?

Verleger: Das finde ich sehr schmerzlich und ich denke aber, dass eben dieses ungelöste Palästina ist ein Problem und hier völlig wieder auf die Füße fällt und der Beitrag, den ich grad gehört habe, der lief ja live, dass die Zivilgesellschaft gefordert sei, ihrerseits ein Zeichen zu setzen. Das werde ich auch tun, indem ich nämlich nächsten Mittwoch mich an einer Demonstration beteiligen werde gegen das Massaker der Israelis in Gaza und indem wir als Juden hier gegen dieses Unrecht Stellung nehmen, das denke ich, ist die richtige Art und Weise, solche Ausbrüche von verständlicher Empörung über das, was dort abläuft, das in (grumpel-grumpel) in Bahnen zu lenken. Es haben ja sämtliche Kontrollmechanismen versagt.

Armbrüster: Herr Verleger, rechtfertigt denn eine Kritik an Israel, eine mögliche Kritik, rechtfertigt die, dass man durch Berlin läuft und antisemitische Parolen grölt?

Verleger: Nein, in keiner Weise, aber wer hat uns das denn eingebrockt? Wenn unsere Politiker alle sagen „Ja, das ist völlig richtig, was Israel macht“, wenn unsere Medien sagen „Ja, das ist völlig richtig, was Israel macht“, wenn die Repräsentanten des Judentums, nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern auch in Frankreich zum Beispiel, sagen „Ja, das ist doch ganz klar, wer gegen Israels Maßnahmen ist, der ist gegen Juden“, dann fordert man ja solche antisemitischen Parolen geradezu heraus. Es ist doch eine Absurdität diese Gewaltbereitschaft, diesen nationalreligiösen Hasse, der sich in der israelischen Gesellschaft aufgestaut hat, das mit der jüdischen Tradition von Nächstenliebe und von… dass das mal eine Religion war der tätigen Moral, wie es der Rabbiner Leo Baeck, der Führer des Judentums in Nazi-Deutschland, sagte „Das ist doch was völlig anderes geworden“, das muss man doch sehen und muss darauf reagieren und kann da nicht jeden Quatsch, den Israel dann macht, mitmachen.

Armbrüster: Würden Sie dann der israelischen Regierung das Recht absprechen, sich gegen den Terror der Hamas zu wehren?

Verleger: Würden Sie der Gaza-Bevölkerung das Recht absprechen, sich gegen den Terror Israels zu wehren? Ich meine, so kommt man doch nicht weiter, ja. Man muss doch Kausalketten sehen und was doch gelaufen ist, ist dass die Friedensverhandlungen unter Kerry zusammengebrochen sind aufgrund Israel, das hat Kerry ziemlich klar gesagt, aufgrund der weitergehenden Siedlungspolitik, aufgrund der nicht Freilassung von Gefangenen wie vereinbart. Daraufhin hat sich palästinensische Hamas mit Fatah zusammengetan, das wurde allgemein begrüßt in USA und Europa und nur Netanjahu wollte das zerschlagen und hat eine Kampagne gegen die Hamas gestartet und dann wurden diese drei israelischen Schüler entführt und diese Kampagne hat er ja benutzt dann, um die gesamte Hamas-Investbank zu zerschlagen, im Gazastreifen auch noch ein paar Leute umzubringen, das steht ja nicht in der Zeitung. Dass die dann ihre komischen Raketen abschießen, das ist nicht schön, aber das ist doch eine verständliche Folge all dieser Dinge, ja. Da kann man doch nicht irgendwo aufhören und sagen „Ja, das war jetzt aber Gewalt, da müssen wir dagegen sein“.

Armbrüster: Aber klingt das jetzt nicht alles… ist das jetzt nicht alles sehr verharmlosend, wie Sie das darstellen? Ich meine, Israel steht seit Jahren unter dem Beschuss dieser Raketen, die israelische Armee hat sich aus dem Gazastreifen komplett zurückgezogen und Israel wird trotzdem nach wie vor befeuert aus diesem Streifen. Ist es da nicht verständlich, dass die israelische Armee sagt „Wir wollen dem Einhalt gebieten“?

Verleger: Ja, nur ein Punkt, sie hat sich zwar aus dem Gazastreifen zurückgezogen, aber der Gazastreifen ist ein großes Gefängnis, wie man jetzt gerade sehen kann und der Schlüsselwert heißt Ägypten und Israel. Als ich 15 war, war da sechs Tage Krieg. Damals sagte meine Religionslehrer „Bisher waren Zionismus und religiöses Judentum ein Gegensatz und haben sich erbittert bekämpft. Jetzt wo der Zionismus die heiligen Stätte erobert hat, sehe ich die Gefahr, dass hieraus ein klerikalfaschistisches Amalgamentsteht“ und so ist das gekommen. Sie unterschätzen und verharmlosen was in Israel eine Ideologie herrscht oder zumindest da ist in dieser Siedlerbewegung und die Regierung Netanjahu vor sich hertreibt und das kann man nicht gut finden. Da muss man gegen halten.

Armbrüster: Herr Verleger, ich habe es gesagt, Sie waren bis vor wenigen Jahren Mitglied im Zentralrat der Juden in Deutschland, gibt es dort andere Mitglieder, die mit dieser doch sehr deutlichen Meinung von Ihnen übereinstimmen oder stehen Sie da allein?

Verleger: Ich bin ganz klar in der Minderheit, das ist völlig klar. Das europäische und deutsche Judentum ist ja tot und die kümmerlichen Reste, die wir haben, wir sind ja froh, wenn wir uns irgendwie berappeln können. Natürlich gibt es Leute, die so denken wie ich. Ich meine, ich möchte nochmal etwas Grundsätzliches sagen: Sie fragen mich dazu, ob das gut und richtig ist, was die arabischen Jugendlichen da in Berlin schreien. Ich bin der falsche Mann dafür, Sie müssen das Imam fragen. Ich finde, jeder muss vor seiner eigenen Tür kehren und schauen, was er für den Konflikt getan hat. Dass das nicht richtig, was die in Berlin gemacht, ist ja unstrittig.

Armbrüster: Aber fühlen Sie sich als Jude in Deutschland, als deutscher Jude, davon nicht angesprochen?

Verleger: Selbstverständlich und ich versuche das zu bekämpfen, indem ich sage, das Judentum ist nicht Israels nationalreligiöse Politik. Das Judentum hat eine völlig andere Tradition und das Judentum ist ein Teil unseres Landes und Europas und die Wurzel des ganzen Konfliktes ist ja, weil Europa vor 100 Jahren mit seiner jüdischen Minderheit nicht fertig wurde und dieses Problem dorthin nach Palästina exportiert hat und das fällt jetzt alles eben wieder auf uns zurück, das war nämlich keine Lösung.

Armbrüster: Können Sie es denn verstehen, wenn viele deutsche Politiker vorsichtig sind mit Kritik an Israel, allein wegen der deutschen Geschichte?

Verleger: Nein, das kann ich nicht mehr verstehen. Ich meine, was hat das mit meiner ermordeten Verwandtschaft zu tun, dass da jetzt ein solches Unrecht im Nahen Osten geschieht? Man kann doch nicht mit Verweis auf schreckliche Dinge in der Vergangenheit weiter heute Unrecht geschehen lassen. Das ist die völlig falsche Lehre, die da gezogen wird. Ich kann das nicht mehr verstehen. Ich finde das sind Angsthasen und ich finde, sie sollten mal das sagen, was sie nach abgeschalteten Mikrofonen sagen, das sollen sie mal bei laufenden Mikrofonen sagen.

Armbrüster: Was würden Sie denn von deutschen Politikern erwarten?

Verleger: Ich finde es eine Absurdität, sich hinzustellen und zu sagen, das sei das selbstverständliche Verteidigungsrecht Israels, jetzt dieses Massaker in Gaza anzurichten. Das ist doch… Jeder vernünftige Mensch sagt sich, da stimmt doch was nicht und wenn dagegen Protest laut wird, der dann überbordet, dann muss man sich doch nicht wundern, wenn man so einen Blödsinn sagt.

Armbrüster: Wie schätzen Sie ein oder wie beurteilen Sie das, wie sich die israelische Regierung in diesem Konflikt positioniert?

Verleger: Die hat den angefacht. Es geht ja darum, dass verhindert werden sollte, dass Fatah und Hamas sich einigen, das wollte Netanjahu nicht haben und da hat er eine Kampagne gestartet in der Westbank, die hunderte von Hamas verhaftet, weil sind ja auch ein paar Leute totgegangen, darauf basierte ja diese Entführung der drei Jugendlichen, die ja sofort tot waren, aber das wurde ja ignoriert, um diese Kampagne weiterzuführen. Die sind auf dem völlig falschen Weg. Dieser Konflikt, man kann auf gerauchtem Sand nicht in Frieden leben. Das Land ist den Palästinensern weggenommen worden und es muss eine vernünftige friedliche Regelung her, die bedeutet, dass Israel schmerzhafte Kompromisse machen muss.

Dummheit ist, wenn jemand nicht weiß, was er wissen könnte.

Political correctness ist, wenn man aus Feigheit lügt, um Dumme nicht zu verärgern, die die Wahrheit nicht hören wollen.

Antisemitismus ist, wenn man Juden, Israel übelnimmt, was man anderen nicht übelnimmt.

Islam ist weniger eine Religion und mehr eine totalitäre Gesellschaftsordnung, eine Ideologie, die absoluten Gehorsam verlangt und keinen Widerspruch, keinerlei Kritik duldet und das Denken und Erkenntnis verbietet. Der wahre Islam ist ganz anders, wer ihn findet wird eine hohe Belohnung erhalten.

Wahnsinn bedeute, immer wieder das gleiche zu tun, aber dabei stets ein anderes Resultat zu erwarten.

Gutmenschen sind Menschen, die gut erscheinen wollen, die gewissenlos das Gewissen anderer Menschen zu eigenen Zwecken mit Hilfe selbst inszenierter Empörungen instrumentalisieren.

Irritationen verhelfen zu weiteren Erkenntnissen, Selbstzufriedenheit führt zur Verblödung,

Wenn ein Affe denkt, „ich bin ein Affe“, dann ist es bereits ein Mensch.

Ein Mensch mit Wurzeln soll zur Pediküre gehen.

Wenn jemand etwas zu sagen hat, der kann es immer sehr einfach sagen. Wenn jemand nichts zu sagen hat, der sagt es dann sehr kompliziert.

Sucht ist, wenn jemand etwas macht, was er machen will und sucht jemand, der es macht, daß er es nicht macht und es nicht machen will.

Sollen die Klugen immer nachgeben, dann wird die Welt von Dummen regiert. Zu viel „Klugheit“ macht dumm.

Wenn man nur das Schlechte bekämpft, um das Leben zu schützen, bringt man gar nichts Gutes hervor und ein solches Leben ist dann nicht mehr lebenswert und braucht nicht beschützt zu werden, denn es ist dann durch ein solches totales Beschützen sowieso schon tot. Man kann so viel Geld für Versicherungen ausgeben, daß man gar nichts mehr zum Versichern hat. Mit Sicherheit ist es eben so.

Zufriedene Sklaven sind die schlimmsten Feinde der Freiheit.

Kreativität ist eine Intelligenz, die Spaß hat.

Wen die Arbeit krank macht, der soll kündigen!

Wenn Deutsche über Moral reden, meinen sie das Geld.

Ein Mensch ohne Erkenntnis ist dann  lediglich ein ängstlicher, aggressiver, unglücklicher Affe.

Denken ist immer grenzüberschreitend.

Der Mob, der sich das Volk nennt, diskutiert nicht, sondern diffamiert.

Legal ist nicht immer legitim.

Wer nicht verzichten kann, lebt unglücklich.

Sogenannte Sozial-, Kultur-, Geisteswissenschaften, Soziologie, Psychologie, Psychotherapie, Psychoanalyse, sind keine Wissenschaften mehr, sondern immanent religiöse Kultpropheten, organisiert wie Sekten.

Ohne eine starke Opposition atrophiert jede scheinbare Demokratie zur Tyrannei, und ebenso eine Wissenschaft, zur Gesinnung einer Sekte.

Man kann alles nur aus gewisser Distanz erkennen, wer sich ereifert, empört, wer mit seiner Nase an etwas klebt, der hat die Perspektive verloren, der erkennt nichts mehr, der hat nur noch seine Phantasie von der Welt im Kopf. So entsteht Paranoia, die sich Religion, und Religion als Politik, sogar als Wissenschaft nennt.

Islamisten sind eine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche nicht gesehen. Juden sind keine Gefahr, deswegen werden sie als solche gesehen. So funktioniert die Wahrnehmung von  Feiglingen.

Humorlose Menschen könner nur fürchten oder hassen und werden Mönche oder Terroristen.

Menschen sind nicht gleich, jeder einzelne Mensch ist ein Unikat.

Erkenntnis gilt für alle, auch für Muslime, Albaner, Frauen und Homosexuelle.

Islam gehört zu Deutschland, Judentum gehört zu Israel.

Der Konsensterror (Totalitarismus) ist in Deutschland allgegenwärtig.

Es wird nicht mehr diskutiert, sondern nur noch diffamiert.

Es ist eine Kultur des Mobs. Wie es bereits gewesen ist.

Harmonie ist nur, wenn man nicht kommuniziert.

Man soll niemals mit jemand ins Bett gehen, der mehr Probleme hat, als man selbst.

Man muß Mut haben, um witzig zu sein.

Dumm und blöd geht meistens zusammen.

Charlie Hebdo: solche Morde an Juden sind euch egal, mal sehen wie”angemessen”  ihr reagiert, wenn (wenn, nicht falls) eure Städte von Islamisten mit Kasam-Raketen beschossen werden.

Christopher Hitchens großartig: „In einer freien Gesellschaft hat niemand das Recht, nicht beleidigt zu werden.“

Je mehr sich jemand narzisstisch aufbläht, desto mehr fühlt er sich beleidigt und provoziert.

Das Problem mit den Islamisten in Europa soll man genauso lösen, wie es Europa für den Nahen Osten verlangt: jeweils eine Zweistaatenlösung, die Hälfte für Muslime, die andere Hälfte für Nicht-Muslime, mit einer gemeinsamen Hauptstadt.

Was darf Satire? Alles! Nur nicht vom Dummkopf verstanden werden, weil es dann keine Satire war.

Islam ist verantwortlich für gar nichts, Juden sind schuld an allem.

Islamisten sind Satanisten.

Leute fühlen sich immer furchtbar beleidigt, wenn man ihre Lügen nicht glaubt.

Islamists are a real danger, therefore they will not be seen as such. Jews are not a danger, therefore they are seen as such. It is how the perception by cowards functions.

People without a sense of humor are able only to fear or to hate and become monks or terrorists.

People are not equal, each single person is unique.

Insight applies to everyone, including Muslims, Albanians, women and homosexuals.

Islam belongs to Germany, Judaism belongs to Israel.

The totalitarian Terror of consensus is ubiquitous in Germany.
