Agnon HouseS.Y. Agnon, 1908

S.Y. Agnon (1888–1970), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1966, is the one modern master among writers of Hebrew fiction. Jeffrey Saks has undertaken a heroic task in assembling the Agnon Library, using existing translations, which generally have been revised, and commissioning English versions of previously untranslated books. It is not quite a complete works because some books could not be included for reasons of copyright or on other grounds. The most unfortunate omission is Agnon’s modernist masterpiece, Only Yesterday (1945), a wrenching and richly inventive novel about a naive young Zionist’s failed attempt to take root in the land, which unfolds in Jaffa and Jerusalem in the early years of the twentieth century.

Shmuel Yosef Agnon (his original family name was Czaczkes) was born in Buczacz, a town of about 15,000, over half of whom were Jews, that at one time belonged to Poland, was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the late eighteenth century until the end of World War I, and is now in western Ukraine. In an Orthodox home, under the supervision of his learned father, he was given a thorough education in the classic Jewish texts, from the Bible with its medieval Hebrew exegetes to the Talmud, and he would draw on this background extensively throughout his career. But his family also engaged a German tutor for him, and he read Goethe, Schiller, and other German writers with his mother. The adolescent Agnon was drawn to Zionism, a movement then less than ten years old, and in 1908, when he was nineteen, he immigrated to Palestine.

Like most of the young Zionists of that era, he proceeded to abandon the religious practice of his childhood. The Hebrew stories he began to publish in Palestine quickly attracted attention, the first being Agunot (“Abandoned Women”), a story of unhappy lovers written as if it were a folktale, from which he took his rather somber new name.

In 1913, for reasons that remain obscure, he moved to Germany. Whether or not he intended a long stay, he was caught there by World War I, and he did not return to Palestine until 1924, married and with two children. He settled permanently in Jerusalem and returned to Orthodox observance. He appears to have used his German years to immerse himself in European culture while continuing to write Hebrew fiction. He also did some teaching at Franz Rosenzweig’s Frankfurt Lehrhaus, collaborated with Martin Buber in collecting Hasidic tales, and began a lifelong friendship with Gershom Scholem, the great historian of Jewish mysticism.

Agnon is in some respects an anomalous modernist. Early on, he had an affinity for European gothic writers, and gothic motifs such as the Dance of Death, ghostly brides, and revenants occur in many of his stories. He might, one conjectures, have been drawn to Thomas Mann’s recurrent theme of the conflict between eros and the calling of the artist and to Mann’s use of narrative leitmotifs. The dreamlike surrealist stories Agnon began to write in the 1930s are in some ways reminiscent of Kafka, though in one interview he vehemently denied any connection, saying that he had only one or two books by Kafka on his shelves and that the main thing for him as a writer was what the Holy One inspired in his heart. With characteristic slyness, he added that his wife, on the other hand, owned Kafka’s collected works.

In a 1916 letter to Salman Schocken, the department store magnate and, later, publisher who became his patron, he expressed his profound admiration for Flaubert, whom he would have read in German translation. This was a writer, he said, “who mortified himself in the tent of art,” pointedly substituting “art” for “Torah” in a well-known rabbinic idiom. Flaubert was his model for the painstaking devotion to the writer’s craft—Agnon assiduously revised much of his work, and in the years immediately after World War I he transformed some of the effusive stories of his first decade of writing into beautifully disciplined prose. I suspect that he also learned from Flaubert the narrative technique of free indirect discourse, in which a character speaks through the voice of the narrator, which he frequently used as an instrument of psychological characterization.

Despite all this, Agnon often wrote as a traditional teller of Hebrew tales for whom the corpus of European literature was remote. In one of his stories he refers to “Homer, the master [rav] of the poets of the Gentiles,” using paytan as the word for “poet,” a term that usually designates a composer of liturgical verse. The stylistic pretense here is that Homer belongs to an unfamiliar realm, though in Agnon’s haunting novella Betrothed he has an important part in the protagonist’s fateful passion for the sea and the Mediterranean world of origins. Scholem, in an interview on Israeli television a few years after Agnon’s death, was asked by the critic Dan Miron what he made of Agnon’s Orthodoxy. Scholem shrewdly responded that for Agnon art was the crucial consideration and that he was religious because it served his purposes as an artist.

His religious identity is clearly inseparable from the unique path he chose as a Hebrew stylist, and that in turn poses a constant challenge for translating his work. “My language,” he writes, “is a simple language, the language of all the generations that preceded and of all the generations to come.” His Hebrew is essentially the Hebrew of the early rabbis, which means the Hebrew of the Mishnah and the Midrash compiled early in the Common Era, with at some moments a trace of Yiddish inflections and occasional limited concessions to the modern language. His hyperbolic invocation of “the language of all the generations” reflects his classicizing bent: for him, rabbinic Hebrew is as living and subtly expressive a vehicle as it was eighteen hundred years ago, and by using it he means his works to be similarly long-lasting.

It is scarcely the language of the most recent generation of Hebrew speakers. When I taught a graduate seminar on Agnon’s novellas at Berkeley a few years ago, several of the students were young Israelis with whom I had to spend some time in class explaining rabbinic terms and idioms and identifying the allusions to biblical and later texts. Agnon’s Hebrew, of course, is wonderfully apt for all the stories and novellas that use the device of a traditional teller of tales—who often proves to be ironic or subversive beneath the mask of tradition. In the novels and stories that deal with people in modern settings, the prose often has the effect of generating pervasive ironies because of the cultivated discrepancy between the Late Antique coloration of the Hebrew and the world of the characters, often characterized by secular values, the ambiguities of sexual freedom, and the ravages of modern war.

In view of the distinctive charm and force and the literary echoes of this writing, I sometimes have suspected that Agnon may be one of those writers, like Pushkin, who are absolutely brilliant in the original and don’t come across very well in translation. But this could not be altogether true. Walter Benjamin, reading Agnon in the German translations of his early work in the 1920s, was convinced that he was a great writer. Edmund Wilson, the first American critic to draw attention to him, came to the same conclusion in an essay for The New Yorker in the late 1950s.

The many translators Jeffrey Saks has gathered for his series by and large respond creditably to the challenge, though there is, understandably, some unevenness. Even a single ill-considered word-choice can throw a translation out of kilter. In one story, when a ragged stranger appears at a synagogue in Buczacz, we realize before long that he must be the Elijah of Jewish folklore. Again and again in this English version, he is called “the vagrant,” but the Hebrew heilekh means no such thing. A heilekh is a wayfarer, a traveler on foot, with none of the negative connotations of vagrancy, which would scarcely suit the harbinger of the messiah. Elsewhere, translations are at points marred by errors in English idiom or grammar (even “like” for “as,” or “who” for “whom.”) This is unfortunate because Agnon’s Hebrew is meticulously correct and exhibits perfect pitch in the rabbinic idiomatic usage it has adopted. These are, however, no more than small flaws.

The anomaly of Agnon as a modernist is manifested in the two quite different aspects of his fiction. Many of the novels and stories with a modern setting have a mastery of form that shows Agnon as a peer of Mann, Hermann Broch, and modernists such as Faulkner and Joyce whom he may or may not have read. (When I visited him as a student at his home in 1960, there was a copy on his desk of A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, just then translated into Hebrew.) But there are also works, including one important novel, A Guest for a Night (1941), that seem loosely associative, anecdotal, episodic. In texts written by some writers of the Jewish Diaspora, the critic Benjamin Harshav writes,

each detailed observation is treated for its autonomous value. Every detail is taken out of its narrative chain and observed close up; it does not lose the reader’s interest, for it belongs to one total universe, which endows each detail with rich meaning and depth.

Harshav links this kind of discourse with traditional methods of Talmud study as they have been “folklorized” in Yiddish-speaking culture, and he finds its aftermath in the writings of Freud, Kafka, Saul Bellow, and others.

In some cases, Agnon uses such episodic discourse to good artistic effect, as in A Guest for the Night, which doesn’t have much of a plot but nevertheless creates a powerful portrayal of the devastation wreaked by World War I on the narrator’s hometown, to which he has come from Jerusalem for an extended stay and where he finds a world of maimed bodies and people with the bleakest prospect for any collective future. He calls the town, here and elsewhere, Szybusz, an obvious substitute for Buczacz, which sounds like a Polish name but in Hebrew means “breakdown” or “distortion.” In other instances, the cultivation of Jewish discourse seems a little self-indulgent and can be annoying to the reader, as in his posthumously published novel, In Mr. Lublin’s Store, set in Leipzig during World War I.

Much of his longer fiction, however, follows the patterns of the European art novel, as do his exquisitely wrought novellas—And the Crooked Shall Be Made Straight (admired by Walter Benjamin), Hill of Sand, In the Prime of Her Life, Betrothed, and Edo and Enam. The most striking example of Agnon as a “European” writer is the novel A Simple Story (1935), set in Szybusz at the beginning of the twentieth century. Like many of Agnon’s stories and novels, it is a tale of doomed love. Hirshl, the passive protagonist, is hopelessly in love with his poor cousin Bluma Nacht—“night flower” in both German and Yiddish—who has come to work as a servant in his parents’ house. As prosperous bourgeois shopkeepers, however, the parents arrange a marriage for him with the daughter of an affluent farmer. After the wedding, Hirshl’s obsession with Bluma continues to grow and his mind deteriorates until he has a psychotic breakdown, brilliantly rendered by Agnon. In the end, he returns to sanity and reconciles with the wife his parents have chosen for him, but it is a reconciliation suffused with bitter irony, for it entails succumbing to their world of coin-counting, social conventionality, and complacent materialism.

A Simple Story is the most Flaubertian of Agnon’s novels, and in keeping with its French model, it is the most perfectly constructed. He often draws on Flaubert’s technique of free indirect discourse to represent Hirshl’s consciousness and his habitual failure to recognize the real nature of his own desires. Also Flaubertian is the reiteration of motifs—roosters, geese, cigarettes, coins, and much else—that have their own fraught presence and help pull the novel tightly together. And Agnon surely would have sympathized with Flaubert’s animus against the bourgeoisie. All the bourgeois figures in the novel are Jews, but they are also preeminently European, and this is a thoroughly European novel. Written between the two world wars, it feels rather like a nineteenth-century European novel. By this time, Agnon had already begun writing experimental fiction, but his major modernist novels and novellas still lay ahead.

Readers who make their way through Jeffrey Saks’s series will see that Agnon is often deeply immersed in the ancestral world of piety. He sincerely loved the sacred books that were its foundation, and he shows genuine reverence for his forebears’ devotion to God and Torah. Nevertheless, the pious impulse in his writing is not always what meets the eye, and it is well to keep in mind Scholem’s observation that the religiosity ultimately served Agnon’s aims as an artist.

A case in point is the large cycle of stories A City in Its Fullness, edited by Agnon’s daughter after his death. The stories, some folkloric, many realistic, all take place in a Buczacz of centuries past. Agnon wrote them relatively late in life, brooding over the fate of his hometown, where almost the entire Jewish population was slaughtered on a single day by the Nazis. Though the stories are from time to time punctuated by angry denunciations of the killers, one must agree with the American scholar Alan Mintz that for Agnon “the truest response to the Holocaust is to create literarily the fullness of Jewish life before that dark shadow was cast.” Several of the early stories in the cycle are virtually hagiographic, celebrating prodigies of devotion to Torah scholarship and to the scrupulous observance of all the minute details of rabbinic law.

As the book progresses, however, we begin to encounter shocking tales of vindictiveness, greed, gluttony, and the heartless exploitation of the helpless poor. Even a story that ostensibly extols an extreme act of piety, about a man who dies of hunger in the forest, though he has food, because he refuses to eat in the absence of water for the ritual washing of hands, makes piety look like craziness. A City in Its Fullness, at first glance a loving commemoration of the ancestors whose descendants were murdered, turns out to have a subversive undercurrent, as in much of Agnon. As an artist he was too deeply committed to an unblinking vision of things as they are to sustain an aura of reverence.

“In the Forest and in the Town,” a story first published in 1938 and not yet included in the Agnon Library (it should be translated in one of the two remaining volumes), offers an instructive clue to Agnon’s larger enterprise. The first-person narrator, an adolescent, has abandoned his Talmud studies to go wandering every day in the forest outside his town, presumably Buczacz. He takes with him a copy of the Hebrew Bible but informs us that he is reading the Prophets and the Writings, possible sources of poems and stories, and not the Torah, the compendium of laws and the primary point of departure for the Talmud. He is the artist as a young man.

There is an obvious antithesis between the town, where people constantly worry about making a living, and the forest, which is represented as both edenic and wild. (The use of opposites is also suggested in the Hebrew words for “forest” and “town,” which are anagrams of each other.) In this forest, however, there lurks an escaped multiple murderer called Franciszek. That the killer bears the same name as the gentle saint who spoke to the birds is one of several reversals of received notions in the story.

The narrator’s parents are, of course, alarmed that their son should insist on continuing his visits to a dangerous place, but he is not in the least frightened by the prospect of encountering the murderer, which as readers we sense will occur. First, however, he meets an enigmatic old man who decides to tell him—their conversation would have to be in Polish—what happens in the initial chapters of Genesis, concluding with “Abel rose up and killed Cain. Of course, Cain could have killed Abel, but he who must die, dies.” The narrator makes no comment on this startling switch of killer and victim, though it will be recalled at the end of the story.

When the narrator finally comes upon Franciszek, the two speak amicably, and the escaped murderer offers the young man a swig of schnapps from the flask fastened to his belt. The narrator accepts, but before he drinks, because he is, after all, an observant Jew, he pronounces in Hebrew the requisite blessing, which ends with the words “for everything comes about through His word.” Franciszek asks him to translate and then has him repeat the words in Hebrew, shehakol nihyeh bidvaro. He ponders what the young man has told him the words mean, repeatedly muttering, “Maybe it’s so.” Then he tries to parrot the Hebrew, managing only a mangled version of the first word—tchokl. The narrator goes home, careful to reveal nothing of his meeting in the forest.

After a time, Franciszek is captured and subsequently led out for a public execution with much of the town’s population present. The townspeople show mixed feelings toward the condemned man, some wanting to see him killed, others finding themselves strangely sympathetic toward him. “But since man’s imagination,” the narrator strategically remarks, “cannot match the attribute of cruelty he possesses, they accepted despite themselves the verdict of the judges.” The narrator ends up standing close to the gallows, and as the noose is about to tighten around Franciszek’s neck, he is heard to utter a single word, tchokl. The other bystanders are perplexed, but the narrator thinks he understands: when the killer first heard the declaration “for all comes about through His word,” he wondered whether it was true; now, at the moment of death, he accepts his fate, affirming that even the cycle of violent crime and inexorable punishment is part of a divine plan.

The story turns conventional ideas upside down. The serial killer is a kind of rude philosopher; everyone, as the narrator observes elsewhere in the story, has the potential to be a killer; Abel was fated to murder Cain, though it could have been the other way around. In the forest, the narrator, manifestly Agnon’s surrogate, performs a ritual gesture prescribed by religious law in reciting the blessing, but it is the killer rather than the young Jew who thinks hard about the meaning of the words. In the wild beyond the town, a secret pact is sealed between the future artist and the criminal.

That, I would contend, is the underlying paradox of Agnon’s multifaceted project as a writer. He often presented himself to his readers and to the public eye as a modern avatar of Jewish tradition, writing in the very Hebrew in which it had been fashioned, expressing reverence for its sages and saints. But he also had a sense that there was a kinship between the artist and the outlaw. Agnon certainly cherished the knowledge that could be attained from sacred texts, and also, as an autodidact and the friend of modern scholars, he evinced some admiration for secular scholarship as an instrument of knowledge.

Yet he conceived art—as becomes clear in Shira, his posthumously published novel about eros and art, art and disease—to be the vehicle of a more profound, more perilous and painful order of knowledge than could be attained through any institution of learning, pious or secular. Endorsed by a community, whether in a yeshiva or a research library, such learning could lead one only so far. It is, finally, in his view, the artist who is prepared to take the dangerous last step into the forest where ultimate contradictions must be confronted, where he must put himself beyond the pale of received values, like his secret brother, the outlaw.

Diaspora Disneys

Krakow.jpg
The former Jewish district in Kraków, Poland

Hanukkah commemorates persistence against overwhelming odds, when Jewish rebels in Judea defeated their Hellenic overlords and oil lamps meant to last a single day miraculously burned eight times as long. Five years ago I heard of what seemed another miracle. Despite having been nearly stamped out by the Nazis six decades earlier, the spirit of Jewish life in Poland had been kindled again in Kraków, near the farmlands where my family had lived for perhaps nine centuries.

Cafés, I was told, served jellied carp with raisins. Klezmer tunes bounced down the cobbled streets. Prewar shop signs had reappeared, flanking a bustling square as if its Jews had never left. The cooks and klezmorim, I later learned, were nearly all non-Jews, the crowds made up of tourists, the façades only that. Auschwitz, a mere hour away, remained a brutal warning against rosy nostalgia or frivolity. Still, I needed to see all this for myself. I went.

The Festival of Jewish Culture takes place each midsummer in Kraków’s former Jewish quarter. It began at the close of the communist period as a low-key affair organized by a non-Jewish Krakovite haunted by his city’s history and leaders of Warsaw’s “Flying Jewish University”—a sort of underground Hebrew school. Now it runs for over a week and draws tens of thousands of visitors—mostly non-Jewish Poles, Germans, and other Europeans. (There are about 5,000 to 30,000 Jews in Poland today, depending on how you count.) Desecrated cemeteries and synagogues have been restored and abandoned townhouses turned into shops, hotels, and restaurants, some with Jewish themes. The overall effect may recall Disney’s Main Street USA, though the festival itself is, for the most part, deeply earnest and respectful. The program combines entertainment by musicians and theater troupes, Jewish and Gentile, working to preserve the Jewish legacy, with scholarly lectures on Europe’s Jewish past, hora dance lessons, and discussions between Jews and non-Jews about the Holocaust and continuing anti-Semitism.

My trips to the Kraków festival led me to other cities in Europe and Asia whose suppressed Jewish histories are now being recovered—and reenacted—in fascinating ways: Łódź, Berlin, Vilnius, Lviv, and elsewhere. Perhaps the most bizarre is Birobidzhan, in far-eastern Russia, near China, established by Stalin in the 1930s as a relocation colony for Jews unwanted in Ukraine. Of the 40,000 Jews who were settled there, most intermarried, assimilated, or emigrated. There are few “full” Jews remaining, but sixteen percent of the city’s current population of 75,000 claim some degree of Jewish ancestry, and the city has made a major effort to showcase its heritage. Birobidzhan’s own Jewish culture festival, which takes place every other September, has grown from a local talent show into a grand, Hollywood-style affair, with glitzy sets and imported entertainers. Few visitors from afar attend, yet aspirations remain high—plans are in the works to build a full-scale “Jewish town” based on Seoul’s Korean Folk Village. The city council has ordered restaurants to revive old Jewish dishes: this year’s festival involved a sixty-six-foot gefilte fish aimed at a world record to put this remote, somewhat bleak swamp-plane town on the map.

gefilte.jpg
Jan Paul BaucheJewish Festival headliner Iosif Kobzon, the “Frank Sinatra of Russia,” with a sixty-six-foot gefilte fish, Birobdizhan

But other attempts at reviving Birobidzhan’s Jewish culture are more serious. Yiddish—once an official language of the region, the only place in history where this was ever so—appears on street signs and in the local paper, and is taught in schools. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, 150 Yiddish teachers have been trained. Community groups stage Yiddish plays and songfests. TV and radio shows feature Jewish themes. Many who take part have no Jewish background, but treat the city’s Jewish past as a civic legacy it is their duty to uphold. And Jews are admired for what are regarded as laudable values: education, self-discipline, and financial smarts. After Russia’s long history of persecution, Birobidzhan’s Judeophilia, however reliant on stereotypes, may be something of a positive development.

The Jewish festival in Hervás, Spain, which I attended in July, is a different case. Hervás is a mountain village some hours’ drive through scrubby desert from Madrid. Its festival technically honors conversos, or Jews forced to convert during the Inquisition. While Hervás had Jewish inhabitants—forty Jews, or possibly Jewish families, are listed in a census from 1492—cohesive, flourishing communities of Jews lived in larger towns several miles away. And the well-preserved medieval neighborhood registered as the “Jewish Quarter” was no more Jewish, scholars maintain, than any other in Hervás. The quarter, they say, is really just a fantasy devised to attract tourist income to a town with stunning architecture and views but little employment.

The festival features a play—a fluffy melodrama of doomed love between a Jewish girl and Catholic boy slain by spurned lovers from both sides. A spectacular mash-up of medieval pageant, commedia dell’arte, Fiddler on the Roof, West Side Story, and soap-opera télénovela, the show is performed on the Hervás riverbank in the middle of the night. It involves a cast of eighty, including acrobats, fire jugglers, scores of children, a dog, a donkey, and a horse. (A tragedy about Spain’s Jewish past by a Jewish author in Madrid, mounted the first year of the festival, was hugely reworked and then scrapped as insufficiently festive.) The audience—teens in bleachers, elders in folding chairs, toddlers surreally placid given the hour crawling in fresh-mown hay—chats throughout, pointing at friends in the cast. The event has the aura of a county fair.

By day, villagers attired as Jews, loosely imagined—Moroccan djellabas, hippie skirts, babushka scarves—hold what’s billed as a “Jewish market” (what makes it Jewish, evidently, is the notion common in Spain that Jews excel at selling things). Among scheduled activities, only one had much to do with Jewish history: a walking tour sponsored by a progressive folksong troupe from a larger city in the region relating the events of the Inquisition. Shoppers looked up, startled and transfixed, but when the tour moved on the market resumed its holiday air.

Hervas boy.jpg
Johnny GarciaBecoming a “Jew” for a day, Hervás

The commercial aspects of Hervás’s festival—funded by the village’s chamber of commerce as a boon to local business—are hardly unique. Birobidzhan’s cultural renaissance, has, similarly, garnered it development grants from Moscow; while on the fringes of the Kraków festival, stands sell hook-nosed “Jew” figurines. Yet much more is at stake in both places than profit. In Kraków, with its rich, traumatic history, the festival is an attempt to confront the still relatively fresh loss of what was once the world’s largest Jewish population, as well as the question of Polish complicity with Nazis in the war, communist suppression of Holocaust history, and continuing European intolerance; it’s also a chance for Poles to reflect on their country’s future as a conservative, culturally monolithic nation in a changing, diversifying Europe. Birobizhan’s Jewish cultural revival appears primarily to enliven an isolated, poor, rather bleak place unremarkable but for its unique history. Despite some silliness and confusion, the more sober efforts to teach Yiddish and Jewish history ensure that important legacies are preserved. And perhaps even theme-park-style memorialization is more salutary than the more common case in places from which vital cultures have more or less vanished: sheer oblivion.

In Hervas, the evocation of a Jewish past is so perfunctory and historically fanciful as to border on the offensive. Stars of David adorn street signs, window grates, and even, for no clear reason, the church. There is a Judería Tavern and a Hotel Sinagoga: the former, on inspection, specializing in ham, the latter indistinguishable from a Holiday Inn. On arrival, I was amused by the kitsch; but by my last day, I felt vaguely sick. The empty symbolism cruelly underscored all that Europe has lost.

Chag Purim Sameah!

Last night Nova, a PBS program, aired a show titled “Secrets of Noah’s Ark” that can be seen on Youtube:

I think most people who have taken religion, civilization or world history classes in college know that the book of Noah was “borrowed” from the Epic of Gilgamesh, a classic of Babylonian culture. When it was written, Babylon was the largest city in the world with 200,000 inhabitants. Today its ruins can be seen about 53 miles south of Baghdad.

There’s a reference to the city in the book of Genesis, the so-called Tower of Babel that was in all likelihood the ziggurat known as Etemenaki, a pyramid-like structure that was the centerpiece of Babylonian architecture. In the Old Testament, the tower was made by people who all spoke the same language. Because the builders supposedly aspired to have it reach the heavens, the deity got mad at them for being prideful, forced them to speak different languages, and then scattered them across the earth. There’s some uncertainty about the etymology of Babel since in Hebrew it means confusion–implying that the reference to Babylon is inaccurate. Whatever the case may be, scholars generally agree that the story had the Etemenaki in mind, the 300-foot-tall ziggurat in Babylon.

etemenanki01

In 578 BC, the Judeans stopped paying tribute to the Babylonians who took retribution by marching off their elite to the city of Babylon, the so-called Babylonian exile—an event that is described as a calamity by official Judaism.

What makes the PBS Nova show interesting is its departure from this narrative. If you go to 40:00 of the Nova video, you will hear from archaeologist Cornelia Wunsch who states that the Jews did “reasonably well” there. Another scholar concurs with her, saying that very soon after being integrated in the city, “things got good”. They became “well ensconced in the Babylonian economy and did well.”

Another scholar looks at a written record that describes a Judean as having both a Jewish and a Babylonian identity, indeed the kind of status that would be enjoyed by Jews in the Middle East and North Africa for millennia. Part of the Judean culture involved writing the stories that would be collected into the Old Testament or what the Jews called the Tanakh.

Irving Finkel, a British scholar of the period, believes that it was not just the Epic of Gilgamesh that influenced the Judean scribes. He points to the story of King Sargon, who was placed in a basket of reeds on the water to save him from those who would prevent him from becoming a monarch. Surely this must have worked its way into the story of Moses.

As it happens, today is a Jewish holiday that is considered minor by religious authorities. Falling on the 14th day of Adar in the Hebrew calendar, which is March 24 in the Gregorian, Purim is considered to be on the same level as Hanukah and pretty much devoid of the piety of Passover or Yom Kippur. Like Hanukah, it is a nationalist tale of the plucky Jews fending off the gentiles.

This time it is not the Babylonians who are the bad guys but the Persians. Haman, the Viceroy of King Xerxes, has decided to kill all the Jews living in Persia after their leader Mordecai got on his wrong side. Queen Esther, a Jew who had married the King without him knowing her ethno-religious roots, interceded on her people’s behalf and convinced the King to execute Haman. As is generally the case in these brutal Old Testament stories, the King gives the Jews the green light to kill anybody they considered their enemy:

The king’s edict granted the Jews in every city the right to assemble and protect themselves; to destroy, kill and annihilate the armed men of any nationality or province who might attack them and their women and children, and to plunder the property of their enemies. The day appointed for the Jews to do this in all the provinces of King Xerxes was the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, the month of Adar. (New International Version)

In the Wikipedia entry on Purim, we learn that some scholars believe that this story, like the ones alluded to above, was borrowed from Babylonian literature. Among them are Amnon Netzer and Shaul Shaked who argue that the names “Mordecai” and “Esther” are similar to those of the Babylonian gods Marduk and Ishtar (the same name of the Elaine May film that was crucified by critics but like “Heaven’s Gate” has gleaned more favorable reviews the older it gets.) Whether or not there is a Babylonian connection, few serious scholars believe that it is based on true events.

Sensing the contradictions of the Book of Esther, one Rabbi Irving Greenberg, went so far as to group Esther and Mordecai as assimilated Jews after the fashion of those who “did well” in the Babylonian exile:

Today, Purim is a quintessential Jewish holiday. To every little boy and girl who masquerades on Purim, Mordecai and Esther are arch-heroes of Jewishness. But a good case can be made that Mordecai and Esther, too, may have been quite integrated in Persian life and that Purim is the holiday brought to you by assimilated Jews.

What kind of Jews were Mordecai and Esther? Obviously, the answer has to be a speculation, and their record of saving the Jews speaks for itself. Still…

First, there is the matter of their names. Esther’s name probably is derived from Ishtar, a Babylonian goddess, and Mordecai’s name from Marduk, a Babylonian god. Equivalent names today might well be Mary and Christopher. Of course, committed Jews in open societies also adopted Gentile names. My parents, Orthodox Jews, wanted an Anglo-Saxon name for their little son, Yitzchak–so they named me Irving. But Christopher!

Then there is that Miss Persia contest. Esther was entered into a competition to become queen by marrying a Gentile king. Imagine that the president of the United States gets divorced and there is a nationwide beauty contest whose prize is marriage to the president. What kind of Jewish women would enter? Not likely Hasidic girls or graduates of Stern College [the women’s college of Yeshiva University].

In 2003 they made a film titled “The Book of Esther” that appears to be part of the Christian Zionist lexicon, at least based on the trailer. Unsurprisingly, it hardly garnered an audience even among Ted Cruz voters.

Of somewhat more interest is the 1960 epic titled “Esther and the King” that is a joint American-Italian production that starred Joan Collins as Esther. It was directed by Raoul Walsh, best known for action melodramas like “White Heat” that starred James Cagney as a gangster (you were expecting a bedroom farce?)

I might have a go at that film courtesy of Youtube:

The only other thing worth mentioning is that these Biblical sagas about heroes and heroines like the Maccabees and Esther were harmless when the Jews were living powerlessly in the shtetls of eastern Europe but when they took over Palestinian territory and set up a Zionist state, got their hands on F-16s and billions of dollars in American aid, such stories began to serve the racist and brutal policies that deepen each year. This report from +972 magazine says it all:

Two individual Arab-Palestinian men were assaulted by mobs of Jewish teens in Jerusalem last Thursday night. Both incidents involved victims who were set upon and beaten so severely that they had to be hospitalized. And in both cases the Israeli Hebrew media outlets that reported the story specified that at least some of the assailants were drunk and in costume. Thursday was Purim in Jerusalem. According to tradition, the festival is celebrated by dressing in costume and drinking to excess.

One of the incidents, reported in a short item by Walla! News, is described as a “suspected nationalist incident.” The Walla! report notes that some of the teens were drunk, that there were about 15 or 16 of them out celebrating the holiday raucously, in the middle of downtown, very late at night. Several people asked the loud celebrants to be quiet, including one young man in his 20s who happened to be an Arab. The teens assaulted him because he spoke Hebrew with an identifiable accent. “I don’t remember much,” he told the reporter. “It hurt a lot.”

Ohne Nazis.

Ach so? So einfach? Ja, so einfach.

Also fangen wir an, aufgepaßt!

Was? Politisch unkorrekt?

  1. Mose – 28. Kapitel

12 Und ihm träumte; und siehe, eine Leiter stand auf der Erde, die rührte mit der Spitze an den Himmel, und siehe, die Engel Gottes stiegen daran auf und nieder;

16 Da nun Jakob von seinem Schlaf aufwachte, sprach er: Gewiss ist der HERR an diesem Ort, und ich wusste es nicht;

21 und mich in Frieden wieder heim zu meinem Vater bringen, so soll der HERR mein Gott sein;

Was ist also geschehen?

So. Was ist passiert?

Fuck you, God, you are fired! Go to Muslims or Christians, they will serve you for nothing, they love to be slaves! But me, I am finished with you, bastard! And now give me a beer. Cheers!

Jakob´s Dream

“Jakob´s Ladder” 2001 © Julian S. Bielicki

Christian Easter and Jewish Passover often fall on the same calendar days. That’s why, in the past, many Christians claimed that Jews celebrate the crucifixion of Christ, for which they murder Christian children in order to use their blood for the producing of the unleavened bread matzo , that Jews eat during Passover. For thousands of years, Christians battled this structural violence by the Jews by means of concrete violence against the Jews, and by murdering them in countless pogroms, which the Christians considered lots of fun. Jews, however, didn’t like that at all. But one must understand the hurt feelings of Christians. It involved specific cultural differences. Nowadays you would refer to it as great diversity and, instead of murdering Christian children for matzo, anti-Semitism and the corresponding pleasurable violence in the form of protests against the settlement policies of Netanyahu are rationalized. Anti-Semites will always find a seemingly rational explanation for anti-Semitism, even if it is being the alleged Jewish financial power. The Antifa (anti-fascist groups) and the Nazis are in agreement and thus one may speak of the unified Nazifa. Recently, such a pogrom took place with the murder of Jews who were on their way to the West, from concentration camps in Poland, 1946 in the Polish city of Kielce , so a year after the war had ended. Without Nazis. Simply by Catholic Poles who were convinced that Jews had once again kidnapped a Christian child, murdered it and used its blood for the production of matzo. The murderous mob (We are the people!) consisted of ordinary people, but also of communist militia and army personnel. Being a leftist was never an obstacle to being hostile toward Jews, and it still isn’t today.

„Exactly 50 years ago, a mob of Polish housewives and police officers, workers and soldiers, took the lives of at least 42 Jews in Kielce, south of Warsaw – it was the worst pogrom in the Polish post-war era. The massacre was – unintentionally – sparked by a young boy. “ Such pogroms, as took place in Kielce, Poland were not uncommon after the war had ended. And there were countless many during the war. Germans murdered Jews from 08AM to 5PM, Poles did it 24/7.

„On July 4th 1946, almost 14 months after the capitulation of the Nazi regime, at least 42 Jews were killed in the preppy city of Kielce. The mob of several hundred laborers and housewives, workers, villagers, police and soldiers lived their raging bloodlust from ten in the morning to four in the afternoon. „(…)

< <Similar excesses took place in the years of 1945 and 1946 in the cities of Krakau, Tschenstochau, Radom and Ostrowiec. Between 1500 and 2000 Jews, most of them survivors of German extermination camps, were killed, stabbed, and stoned by Poland in the first two years after the war. The cruelest pogrom of the Polish post-war history raged in Kielce on July 4, 1946,. „It started here,“ recalls the retired Eugeniusz Rembosz, as he points to the freshly-washed house number 7 in the Planty Street. „They threw children from the balcony, smashed the skulls of babies against walls.“ Supposedly a Jew, not older than 25 years, stood in the middle of the river. „They stoned him, very slowly.“ Everyone in the crowd threw a stone, and the young man in the middle of the river did not resist, „he didn’t even cover his face.“ >>

In many languages of the world, Easter is referred to similarly as Passover: Pasha, Pasgua, Pasqua, Pasquale, etc. In Breton, Easter is even called: Pask Seder

In order to explain what Jews actually celebrate on Pesach for seven days, I have to go into more detail.

Do you know how long Israel has existed? No, you do not know, I guarantee that. But I know it. How Come? Because if I do not know something, then I ask about it. Oh? That simple? Yes, that simple.

Well then, let’s get started. Pay attention!

One of the sons of Isaac , the son of Abraham , the clever Jacob , was sent to Mesopotamia by his father to search for a bride. Jacob was blessed by Isaac as his heir, although Jacob’s brother Esau , the eldest son of Isaac, was entitled to father’s blessing and inheritance by birth right. Jacob was clever, but Esau wasn’t. Therefore Jacob purchased Esau’s birthright in exchange for a mess of pottage. Esau wasn’t only greedy, but as a shepherd, he stank horribly and was very hairy, and Jacob, following his mom’s advice, put on a sheepskin. His father, who was pretty blind by that time, having recognized the stench and the very hairy something in his bed, gave him his blessing as the heir. It pays to be smart, brute force leads to nothing. Even Odysseus knew this later on. Only the Muslims still do not know, but that’s a different story, though not very different. What? Politically Incorrect? Fuck it, do not read it if it does not suit you, asshole!

So let’s continue. Pay attention!

  1. Moses – 28th Chapter

10 Jacob left Beersheba and traveled toward Haran

11 And he came to a certain place, and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took of the stones of the place, and put it under his head and laid down in that place to sleep.

12 And he dreamed; and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.

13 And the LORD stood above it and said: I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and to your seed.

14 And your seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad during evening, morning, midnight and noon; and in you and in your seed, all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

15 And behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. Because I do not want to leave you until I have done what I have promised you.

16 And Jacob awakened from his sleep, and he said: Surely the LORD is in this place, and I knew it not;

17 And he was afraid, and said: How holy is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and here is the gate of heaven.

18 And Jacob rose up early in the morning and took the stone that he had placed as his pillow, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil on top of it

19 And he called the place Beth-El; previously it was called the city of Luz.

20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me and protect me on this path that I travel, and provide for me bread to eat, and clothes to put on

21 And return me to my father in peace, the Lord shall be my God;

22 And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house; and of all that you give me, I will surely give a tenth unto thee.

So what happened? God came to Jacob, and offered him to make public relations for him. His offer was: „15. And behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. Because I do not want to leave you until I have done what I have promised you. “

It’s really not bad, to have a pick up service from problematic situations. But that was not enough for Jacob, he asked God for even more: „And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me and protect me on this path that I travel, and provide for me bread to eat, and clothes to put on

21 and return me to my father in peace, the LORD shall be my God;“

Remember: Bread to eat, not just any „bread“, i.e. bread that tastes good to him, and clothes to wear, not just any „clothes“, ie clothes that he liked, and that God protected him in his travel and bring him back home to the Father in peace.

The covenant Jacob made with God was conditional. It was a contract.

It went on:

  1. Moses – 32nd Chapter

24 32:25 and remained alone. Then a man wrestled with him until the breaking of the day.

25 32:26 And for he saw that he did not prevail against him, he touched the joint of his thigh; and the joint of Jacob’s thigh was dislocated as he wrestled with him

26 32:27 And he said: Let me go, for the day breaketh. But he answered: I will not leave thee, except thou bless me.

27 32:28 He spoke: What’s your name? He answered: Jacob.

28 32:29 He spoke: You shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have fought with God and with men and have prevailed.

29 32:30 And Jacob asked him, and spoke: Please tell me what’s your name? And he said: Why do you ask my name? And he blessed him there.

30 32:31 So Jacob called the place Peniel, saying; because I saw God face to face, and yet my soul was spared.

31 32:32 And as he passed over Penuel the sun rose upon him; and he limped upon his thigh.

32 31:33 That is why, to this day, the children of Israel do not eat the thigh muscle that is at the hip socket, because he touched the hollow of Jacob’s thigh in the sinew that shrank.

So. What happened? God jumps Jacob and wrestles with him, but can not beat him! Has anyone heard of such a thing? God can not defeat a human? Yet, that’s how it is written in the bible. And then God even sprained Jacob’s hip so that Jacob could only walk with a limp from then on. A nice ally! And only since that fight, from which Jacob emerged undefeated, was Jacob called Israel.

Before that there was no Israel!

Thus, in Jewish religion, Jews pray standing up, they do not kneel, as the Christians and do not prostrate on all fours, like Muslims. No, a Jew speaks with God as an equal, standing up. And on Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, a Jew doesn’t just seek forgiveness, but also forgives: other people and God.

And I only ask you, has God fulfilled his obligations he agreed on with Jacob? No, he has not! Therefore, this contract is null and void due to non-performance of contractual commitments of somebody who calls himself God, covenant is dissolved! At least for me, I won’t be sold down the river, not by men, not by God. Fuck you, God, you are fired! Go to Muslims or Christians, they will serve you for nothing, they love to be slaves! Btt me, I am finished with you, bastard! And now give me a beer. Cheers!

A special kind of hate

Pat Condell on Muslim anti-Semitism in Europe.

Today is Holocaust Memorial Day which prompts me to say something that I’ve been meaning to say for a while. Obviously I don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings here, but I would like to clarify something for all you people who are too stupid, prejudiced or just downright ignorant, to see it for yourselves. No offence.

Anti-semitism hasn’t been a major problem here in Europe since the War against the Nazis but now, suddenly, it is again. What could be the reason for this? Anybody want to say? Nobody ever does, even I don’t really want to say what it is but I will anyway, it’s mass Muslim immigration.

Any Jew in Europe today who favours mass Muslim immigration must either be incurably progressive or just plain out of their mind, which actually amounts to the same thing. Jews are being driven out of Europe by Muslim anti-semitism and the rest of us are letting it happen because we don’t have the courage to confront it and call it what it is.

Given the way that Jews have been treated historically in Europe, to call this behaviour cowardly and reprehensible doesn’t come close to doing it justice. Those words are merely polite euphemisms for the moral depravity of what’s actually happening. Politicians are now starting to pay lip service to the problem because they’ve got no choice, saying things like, we must do more to stop this wave of anti-semitism, that we can no longer ignore, even though we’d love to but, we must do more, but we won’t because we can’t even bring ourselves to name the problem in case somebody gets offended. Sorry Jews.

People often say to me, you know not all Muslims hate Jews, it’s Israel they hate, you’re just a racist. Well of course not all Muslims hate Jews but crucially the religion of Islam does hate them. It’s right there in the scripture which was around long before the state of Israel was ever thought of. Given the seriousness with which Muslims tend to take their religion, it’s inevitable that many of them will hate Jews, simply for being Jews, and the evidence is that many of them do which is why every anti-Israel rally that’s full of Muslims quickly turns into anti-Jewish hate fest. Pointing this out does not make me or anyone else a racist. However, denying it in the face of the evidence, does make you a coward and a liar, especially if you call yourself a journalist.

Islamic scripture tells Muslims to look forward to the day when they wipe out the Jews, not Israelis, Jews. That’s why that particular Hadith has been incorporated into the founding charter of the Islamic terrorist group, Hamas. It’s also why Islamic terrorists always make a point of seeking out Jews and killing them first, not Israelis, Jews. Last year, in Gaza, there was a tragic, unnecessary war because the people of Gaza had freely elected this terrorist group of Jew-haters knowing that they would repeatedly attack Israel and knowing that Israel would eventually retaliate and that many people would be killed. That either takes a special kind of stupid, or a special kind of hate. It’s a hate that’s endemic in the Islamic world. Where opinion polls tell us that a majority of people hold opinion about Jews that don’t belong in a civilised society, yet we, in Europe, are busy importing this mentality wholesale, ads part of our multicultural, rainbow coalition of suicidal stupidity and moral cowardice. What could possibly go wrong? Well four people dead in a Jewish supermarket is one thing that could go wrong. Jews abused and attacked on the streets of European cities while the authorities make excuses for their Muslim attackers. Armed guards on Jewish schools, Muslim mobs attacking Synagogues and a mass exodus of Jews from Europe is what could go wrong. In fact, it’s already well under way. The number of Jews leaving France for Israel is doubling every year. This will continue all over Europe because we don’t have the courage to confront this thing, or even to call it what it is.

I know we’ve been beaten down by political correctness and relativism but does anybody actually have a conscience anymore? Or is that just an old fashioned idea now?

Islam has brought many ugly things to western society, and this wave of anti-semitism is just one of them. It’s one with a very sharp edge and we have a responsibility to dull that edge, and to flatten it right out, because we cannot have this in our society and call ourselves civilised or free. The first thing that we need to do about this new phenomenon in Europe of Muslim anti-semitism is to call it what it is and to hell with anyone’s feelings. It’s Muslim anti-semitism, isn’t it Muslims? You know the truth. It’s Muslim anti-semitism politicians, not anti-semitism generally from some vague, unspecified, mystery source. It’s Muslim anti-semitism journalists, mandated by scripture and you’d better write that down in case you forget, because you will. It’s Muslim anti-semitism progressive Jews, not the far right as you would love to believe, and the bad news is it’s coming for you, and when it does nobody will do anything about it, because that might be racist.

If this was happening to any other group of people, the Human Rights industry would be all over it, but nobody gives a damn about Jews and they never have, which is why The Holocaust was allowed to happen in the first place. The same Holocaust that many Muslims teach their children, didn’t happen, because they hate Jews so much. Although they’re happy to acknowledge it when it comes to complaining but Muslims are the new Jews of Europe as some Islamic professional victims love to do. In fact, Jews are the new Jews, Muslims are the new Nazis, not all Muslims of course but enough of them to make a difference, and a very unpleasant difference indeed. The more Muslims that we import into Europe, the more dangerous things are going to get for Jews, either until we grow a collective spine and confront this filthy poisonous Muslim hatred, or until all the Jews have been driven out. So without wishing to put too fine a point on it, which is it going to be?
